blocky picture on new HD tele

hi, thanks for all the advice. what you suggested i tried Andy. first froze
a frame where the black was blocky then tried adjusting the brightness and
contrast (the settings already on were presets). by bringing up the
brightness first. gradually the blocks disappeared and the black became
solid, i adjusted the contrast as well then tried playing through the film
again. looked much better. i think overall the pre sets were all set too
dark.

after tweaking all the controls i just about got rid of all the shimmering
blocking apart from just a little bit every now and then but thats not that
noticable unless you are right up against the screen! i wrote down all the
settings in case the tv loses them too! dont know if i will have to change
them again when i get my dvd upscaler and connect via hdmi but there you go
its all good now

gotta say that all things considered i prefer the lcd to the crt tele
anyday. the picture just looks more lifelike and i really like the totally
flat screen. it does give that cinema feel to watching a movie which the old
crt never had

thanks
Mike

ps does anybody have the back light on full with their LCD? i did but then
turned it down to just 2 and the picture looks a whole lot better

i thought the dvd picture was ok but after watching it for a bit i

that
whenever something black was on the screen inside that black would be a
whole lot of light coloured blocks shifting around!

Is this your first LCD TV after previously having a CRT? What you
describe sounds like a common disadvantage of an LCD, you might be able
to adjust contrast/brightness to help.

and where can we purchase these wonderful gigantic crts ? - answer of course
is, you can't - and never could.
fine if you are happy with a small tv - but if so stick to a 14" portable -
that gives a picture equal in quality to HD for almost every broadcast.

Umm.. They've been around for some time, but as you say are coming
harder to come by. A lot of broadcast engineers still prefer them, can't
think why can you?..

Possibly definition and colour rendering perhaps?

Theres one in my living room, a B&O which still produces fine
reproduction but only when they get it right at the other end and these
days that sometimes leaves something to de desired;(.

Course the SD look's fine blown up on the large screen does it not...

that's 32" - i.e 30" visible.
even being generous, a 30" picture doesnt qualify in my book as big - when
you consider the minimum for a plasma is 42" these days going all the way of
to 103" if you feel flash.

You can't call 32" "gigantic", I have a 36" CRT, I haven't seen anything
bigger sold in the UK. So anyone that wants a bigger screen at the moment
has to go for LCD, Plasma or Projection. I'm hoping OLED will fulfill its
promise in the future but I'm not holding my breath.

CRT's? thats the tele's my parents used to watch that were like goldfish
bowls and are now a sad and small bunch in the dusty and neglected corner of
my local Comet store where people walk by and totally ignore them on the way
to the main massive LCD display!

My 32" CRT is 6 years old, the surface is as flat as a snooker table,
I'm not tempted by any LCD yet ...
