Well worth having. Don't forget to do a Default Setting from the STB menu
afterward.

Says it implements Freeview Playback - Group 1.

Does anyone have any idea what group 1 means? Are all channels broadcasting
the necessary info or is it a clever use of transmission tags to tell when
programmes stop & start?

Group one facilities are essentially for Accurate Recording, and not
much else. So the box should track schedule changes, and if a program
starts late, or up to 10 minutes early, it will still record.

Group 2 of the Freeview Playback spec includes things like Series
Link.

Nigel.

So presumably this could show up in a later version of software?

Do you have any links for what exactly is included in the spec?

I stuck it in this afternoon and tested it on programmes from ITV3, BBC
Four and BBC2 this evening with mixed results. The ITV3 programme was
complete - some of the previous ad break was included, and the whole of
the following ad break and the start of the next programme. Both BBC
recordings missed the start of the programmes and also the ends! This
is useless, of course. I assume the problem lies with the EPG rather
than with the Humax software.

Don't forget to do a Default Setting from the STB menu afterward.

Why?

An undocumented improvement is the inclusion of 32x motion, which is
welcome.

This doesn't happen in other countries.

Freeview playback was launched by the industry nearly a year ago so we
no longer have this problem! If people are seeing programs starting too
early or ending too late it can only be down to the poor quality of
their STBs.

You seem to have misread my entire post. It "can only" be down to the
STBs? The UK broadcasters who are entirely responsible, can't possibly
be to blame in your view? What a strange opinion.

The only way that Freeview Playback will work is for the broadcasters to
supply an accurate EPG. Two leading STB manufacturers are now supplying
boxes under the Freeview Playback label Note that they don't advertise
'Playback Ready.'

This means that the broadcasters are adhering to the published EPG or
else box manufacturers are lying about the current capability of their
products.

Nope. This isn't a new issue. The problem lies with the UK
broadcasters deliberately and systematically running programmes
outside their timeslots as a "spoiler tactic" against a competing
channel. ...

Tempting to believe this. If the BBC were doing what you describe here,
though, it would also be in their interests to adjust the EPG to reflect
these early start times. Some mythtake surely...

It's been going on for years.

They adjust the now+next data on satellite. And presumably on DTT too as
they are fed from the same system. People watching live, or recording on
a Sky+, or a DTT PVR which looks for the data, or a PDC VCR may get the
whole programme. Everyone else doesn't.

I regularly see the BBC 'now' info on DVB-t claiming the programme which
should be on to be on whilst the preceding programme is still on,
sometimes overrunning by ten minutes, perhaps even cancelled. The
NOW/NEXT and EPG are little more than a random guess.

That is the plan, yes - though I don't have the details of when things
will be implemented.

You can find the various different features and groups starting on

Are you talking about the real information, checked by looking at the
stream, or the information displayed to you by your box?

There's a subtle difference; the indication that a program has started
is supposed to be controlled by the EIT present/following flags,
indicating the running status, and you should be being told that
what's broadcast is the item that's marked as currently running.

But it's quite possible for the software in the box to simply look at
the time, and display in the info box the data that it has in its
memory corresponding to that time slot. It's a sloppy way of doing it,
perhaps, but it can be done.

On some kit (the Toppy), you can have a choice here - you can use the
broadcast EPG, or you can use an uploaded one, and typically when you
do the latter, what you'll see is based on the time, not the actual
running status, because you don't have a way of matching the two up.

A box should display info based on running status, rather than time -
and with Freeview Playback the running status is supposed to be
derived from the playout systems, I gather, and then fed to the
central collator for broadcast.

But it's perfectly possible for a box to have been cobbled together
with code that looks at the time instead, I presume. With a bit of
thought, you should be able to devise a test to check exactly what
it's doing.

Nigel.

AIUI the BBC send EIT triggers to the Freeview and Sky EPGs at the *actual*
programme junctions, these are directly driven from their playout computer
(the same data is mirrored for PDC on analogue). Sky+ by whatever means is
able to use these (as IME Sky 'Autoview'), and extend recordings accordingly.
Some Freeview PVRs do the same. My Sony RDR-HXD710 certainly does, my Toppy
certainly doesn't.
It also depends on the design and sofware of the STB whether these updates are
reflected in the basic N+N banners.

It's worth uploading the new software for a couple of bug fixes and 32x fast
forward, but Accurate Recording basically doesn't work. I don't know if it
is down to Humax's software, the broadcasters or both.

I would stick with auto padding for now, and wait for Group 2 FB functions,
which should include Series Link.

There's some good FAQs on all of this over at www.hummy.org.uk.

I checked out the accurate recording function for Dr Who this evening. The
now and next changed as the previous programme finished. My 9200T was
powered up and ready to go but recording did not start at that point. I sat
with my finger ready on the instant record button but the recording started
as soon as the Dr Who prog. started, this was a few minutes after the
scheduled start time. At the end of the programme recording stopped at the
end of the episode but the short "teaser" for the next series was cut off.
So it would appear that "accurate recording" works and that it is dependent
on start/ stop signals being sent out and these are probably being triggered
by morons with no imagination. I will go back to the previous padding method
for the foreseeable future.

Richard.

The Diana gig last night overran by the looks of it as Medium was half an
hour late which I had set to record. I haven't upgraded the Hummy yet but I
did spot that the now/next information had been correctly changed by the BBC
but the entry in the EPG was still showing the old time.

My shining new Humax, shipped with the latest software, shut off the Diana

Sorry to be a (Newby) pest, but what is now/next information?

This means that the broadcasters are adhering to the published EPG or else
box manufacturers are lying about the current capability of their
products.

No it doesn't!! It means the box meets the test specification for Freeview
Playback, that's all.

The service requires TWO components: the appropriate protocols from the
broadcaster, and the appropriate functionality in the PVR.

At the moment the broadcasters are NOT playing ball.
