Sat & Cable cabling
I have satelite and cable, since they both cost me nothing. I also have a
poor terrestrial source that could possibly be improved, but probably not worth the outlay for nonguaranteed gains (tree problem). I wish to distribute the signal of both satelite and cable to various rooms. Satelite on the roof, cable on the ground (wierd huh ;-). I techy but have zero experience of AV type stuff. I believe there is a way to combine signals and then split them. Obviously there are decoder boxes of which I have 1 for each sat/cable. All the cabling can be on one wall and I have accessible hollow ground floor to ease installation. Whats the bet way to sew it all together so I can get Sky in more than 1 room, though not necessarily all and the same for cable? Good DIY guide links appreciated. Thanks. -- Mike W |

Then take the RF2 from the Sky box into a distribution amplifier, and run all the rooms from the amplifier. There are much cleaner ways of doing it (also more expensive) & the above won't allow you to control the decoders from the new rooms. |

Interesting idea though, there'd be no interference then with all the channels from both boxes on the same cable? Or do you mean only have 1 box on at a time? -- Mike W |

We have done a few where we've taken RGB/audio from one room to another and also RF2 just for the eye. Bill |

Depending on the cable box/system you have there will usually be some
available "empty" space on the UHF spectrum (try 36) for you to insert the output of the sky box. So for a simple system you would feed the RF out from the cable box to the Sky box and then take the output from RF2 to a suitable distribution amp with magic eye pass-through abilities and then to the TV's. You can then control the Sky box from the remote rooms. (Remember to switch the RF output power supply on in the installation menu of the Sky box). If you wish to also control the cable box using the same magic eye system, you can use a Global "TV Link Plus Adaptor" just after the RF2 output of the Sky box. This has additional IR leds sprouting out of it so you can place them infront of the cable box (and any other items connected) so you can yse their remotes from the other rooms. Remember the whole thing will only work if you have perfect connections on ALL plugs and sockets. I have found that the other problem with doing this with a cable box is that the cable signal strength into the house varies considerably from house to house and you may have to "tame" them with attenuators before or after the cable box to leave any usable space for the Sky box output without background noise/snow . (On the other hand, they can be very weak!) Of course Bill is right, that you can also take RGB+audio or S video +audio or even composite video to the other room but this gets a bit complicated for more rooms. Of course, video senders are another option if the rooms are close enough and they often provide a remote control return path. Dave |
