Plasmas in Spain

Just had a pleasant time on the Costa Blanca which involved visiting a few
bars - purely for research, of course. Most had plasmas and most showing
Sky sport. And all displaying the wrong aspect ratio. As did the ones
showing the national channels.

Spain, UK, Heathrow Airport Terminal 2, the wrong AR (or to be more accurate,
4:3 images stretched to fill a 16:9 screen) can be seen on 16:9 displays the
world over.

I did once enter a pub in Dartmouth, Devon. That was showing Sky Sports on a
16:9 set. Amazingly both the Sky box, and the TV had been correctly set to 16:9.
Monkeys and typewriters I suppose ?

At the pub where we stayed during the recent Kent trip I sat outside in the
beer garden for several evenings, my eyes drawn irresistibly to the masthead
amplifier. The cover had come off but was still on the plastic strap.
Finally I could stand it no more. Armed with a roll of tape and a convenient
stepladder I briefly explained to the publican the nature of my mission and
climbed out through the skylight onto the flat roof, where I executed a
simple repair. That night there was torrential rain for eight hours.

I have to go to my local every day to check that some idiot hasn't
screwed up the AR during the preceding 20 hours!

In one bar which had about half a dozen TVs of different types, there was
a fashion show on at the same time as the under 21s - both on plasmas. and
one of our group commented that Spanish models weren't as thin as UK
ones...

Yes it's always struck me as odd why so many aerial junction boxes and
masthead amplifiers are so poorly designed in that respect.

After all surely the the people who design them know exactly the kind of
environment they're going to be used in and it therefore shouldn't require
miles of tape or cable ties to make sure that after one or two harsh winters
the lid isn't going to fall off and leave the innards exposed to the
elements.

Also how many times have you come across the (Aerialite?) amplifiers where
the cable tie fixing it to the mast rots after a few years and it
conveniently turns itself upside down so that it can fill up with water!

It's a hard job but someone's got to do it.

If anyone wants some of these I have a box of 50 dated 1971. Pound each?
