OT ish - remote control

Apologies if this isn't the right group (maybe a more appropriate group
could be suggested?)
I have a Swisstec 42" plasma TV that I bought about 15 months ago from
Makro.
The remote has recently stopped working. I've of course changed the
batteries but it still doesn't work.
Is there any way of checking if its the remote control or the remote sensor
on the TV. The red light flashes on he front of the remote when pressed but
there's no light from the end of the remote (had it apart in the dark to
double check)

It will be infra red, so you won't be able to see it even if it's working.
If you have a digital camera with an LCD display, try pointing the camera at
it and viewing via the display while you press buttons. If it's working, you
should see it flash. Try this with a known working remote first to convince
yourself that I'm not trying to make you appear foolish!

If you have a digital camera or a camcorder look at the output of the remote
control when you press a button, it should glow green.

Have you recently fitted a "low energy" (compact fluorescent) light bulb?
These give off a lot of infra-red and can 'block' the receiver if in 'line
of sight'.

In addition to the other suggestions, sometimes the problem is the TV -
have you tried disconnecting it from the power for a short while?

Hey! That's a new one. I'll try that for my myself.

I was going to suggest that you fire up a portable radio with longwave.
Turn it on, and (if necessary) tune off a station. Hold the RC near it,
and press a button. If it's working, it should produce a
'tak-ka-ta-tak-ka-ta' noise on the radio. But, of course, this might not
reveal a duff LED.

Ian.

Worth checking in the dark in case it is something else "blocking" the
signal. Also, perhaps the remote is sending the wrong signals (although
that would be hard to trace) as it might be a "programmable" remote that
you've somehow changed by inadvertently hitting the wrong key sequence.
Note that I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that there
are remotes out there that are "pre-programmed" for a devide but can
actually be set/reset for a different device. For example if you buy a
"replacement" remote, I find they all look the same but they have different
model numbers on a "stick on" panel.

So, off to Makro and take your remote. You can try it against a TV there
and see what happens (perhaps take your receipt so they don't accuse you of
stealing your own remote!). Then you'll know whether to talk to them about
the TV or the remote. And although it's out of warrantee, "fit for purpose"
still applies and I believe it has been established in court that 1 year is
not the expected lifetime of a TV ;-).

Well, it tests the IR LED, but the first controller on my Freeview box
developed some kind of logic fault and although it still 'beamed', the
set ignored it so the test is not 100% accurate.
