DVD to HDTV connections

A HDMI cable runs from the HDTV Digital Ouput socket (on the back of
the satellite receiver) to the HDMI-1 socket (on the back of the
HDTV).

What cables do I need to connect a separate DVD-player to the HDTV and
what sockets do I use?

What connections does your DVD player have? If HDMI and you have
another HDMI socket on the HDTV, you can use an HDMI cable + audio
cable. If that's not available, use component video + audio cable to
connect from the DVD player to the HDTV (I presume your HDTV has
component input). These are your two best quality solutions.

If neither HDMI nor component outputs are available on your DVD player
(unlikely as even older DVD players seem to have component outputs),
use s-video + audio cables.

HDMI doesn't require audio cables

Let's start from the very beginning.

I've connected one end of the HDMI cable to the HDTV Digital Ouput
socket (on the satellite receiver) and the other end to the HDMI-1
socket (on the back of the HDTV).

I then turned on the TV and the receiver and they both have power.

But there's picture and no sound.

Ideas?

And what input have you selected on the TV?

Gary,

Have you tried a different HDMI cable? You may have a bad one. Also,
what model satellite receiver is it? If it is a DISH ViP receiver, call
DISH. There was a group of them with bad HDMI connectors.

Since you are already using the HDMI connector for your satellite
receiver you will need to use the component or composite input on your
HDTV for your DVD player. Don't forget to hook up the left/right audio
cable too.

Hi Bill,

Using the remote control for the HDTV (not the DishNetwork remote),
when I press "MENU", a "SETTINGS" page is displayed.

When I select "SETUP" then "SOURCE", a menu containing AV 1, AV2, AV
3, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, SIDE and DIGITAL AUDIO IN is displayed.

When I select one of these "SOURCES", a menu containing various
devices (i.e., NONE, RECORDER, DVD, SAT, GAME, DIGITAL STB, PVR, HD
and OTHER)

Which device should I select for which SOURCE so my HDTV will receive
signals from my satellite receiver?

Gary,

As for which input (source) pick the one that the HDMI cable from your
satellite receiver is connected to. On some sets it is hard to see the
markings but your should see HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 close to where the HDMI
cables plug in. Of course you want to select SAT as the device.
