Better with a separate DVD recorder and VCR I would have thought. If you get
hold of a couple of good quality VCRs (with HiFi stereo) for about £90 each
they should last you. About £90 each I would have thought. You don't have to
buy them both at once as VCRs should be available for a few years yet -
until analogue switch off I expect.

Here's one. Whether it's old or not, I don't know.

Panasonic DMREZ45V, DVD/VCR, with Freeview tuner.
From SVP's clearance section. £184.99 incl.VAT. Less £10.00, using Google
Checkout.
Does all DVD types, including Ram and Double Layer. No HDD or DivX.

Sylvain.

Look for a combined HDD/DVD machine with rudimentary editing
facilities and a *separate* VHS machine. The VHS machine won't need
any whizzy facilities just for copying, so get a cheap one. You'll be
getting rid of it long before you've finished with the other machine.
You can leave tapes copying to the hard drive as a timed recording
overnight, then top-and-tail the recording, edit out the adverts and
burn to DVD.

Ideally, get a HDD/DVD machine with a built-in freeview tuner, but
they tend to be more expensive. There's nothing to stop you using a
separate freeview box, though you will have to set two time switches
for making off-air recordings.

Rod.

Might be worth pointing out that if you want to copy your commercially
produced tapes then you will need an external box of tricks to strip out
the Macrovision copy protection in the process.

You'd be hard pressed to get spare parts for any machine of this type
these days. When they go wrong you junk them.
