Presumably the H.264 encoder has got better, and I was told last
week that 2nd generation H.264 encoders are due out in the next 6-12
months that'll bring the bit rate down to 8-12 Mbps. To be honest,
the bit rates were never going to stay at 20 Mbps, but so long as it
still looks good I don't mind.
People on DS claim a visibly poorer picture.
Maybe they're doing the same as they did on DAB in 2002: reduce the quality
early to limit the number of people that are disappointed when they end up
reducing the quality down the line.
It's quite easy to make a
fair comparison as BBC HD repeat things so often!
Yeah, you'd presumably just need to wait a few minutes in the daytime for
the BBC HD Preview to start over again.
I don't have an HDTV, so can't comment.
Me neither. I'm going to get one when Freesat launches though.
