Best solution for volume consistency

Hey there -

My HDTV sound levels are nutso. HDTV is whisper quiet. SDTV wakes
the next county. A month ago, the opposite was true.

I'm really hoping some nifty sound amplifier out there can average
audio signals for me. Call it a smart amplifier I guess. Does such a
thing exist?

I have: Scientific Atlantic cable box. Sharp Aquos television.
Component cables. Using the television speakers, no surround sound.

Any help much appreciated! Thanks

That's pretty lame isn't it. KCBS-DT just went HD for local news. Last
night the audio levels were all over the place like 8-10dB spread just
while the anchor is talking. I didn't know the audio went 'HD' too.

This problem was solved over 20 years ago and for the life of me I
can't understand how they all 'forgot' how to do it right.

I just noticed that too, comparing the volume levels of my Time Warner
cable with a couple of DVDs. (I don't know if I compared HDTV
channels to non-HDTV.)

For now, my solution is to turn the cable box's "Dynamic Range
Compression" (or whatever it's called in the Motorola Cable Box's menu
options) to its highest setting.

I did this the other day and the average dialogue from an HDTV channel
became louder -- maybe even as loud as my other inputs.

Set the audio range on your SA box to Narrow. Most of them have a setting
in menu.
