Would the Proms sound any better in High Definition?

yes presumably - as chances are it would be in 5.1

Shame, by then they'll have nothing on worth showing in HD. Well
unless you like on-screen logos, scrolly text, jaunty camera angles

But you'll need a High Definition set during the 2012 Olympics so that you
can see the exertion on the faces of the winners in stunning detail and
still have enough definition in the picture to see the British athletes
waaaaaaay back in the distance as well as being able to make out the
obscene hand gestures from the home crowd.

To me they'd sound better with the mute button applied.

And everyone will need to see the disappointment at 4-5 times higher
quality
images for close-ups in the British team as they lose at every event, plus
the
look of joy in the faces of Seb Coe and Kelly Holmes as they turn up long
past
their prime for no apparent reason.

That's because the Olympic committee insists on including events the British
are not especially good at. Now if they were to include sports such as
binge-drinking, text messaging, scratchcard revealing and sucking up to
Rupert Murdoch, I'm sure the British would win every gold medal going :o)

Nice one :)

They could also include special events for the local councils, such as which
councils can speedily drop a bin collection each week so they only collect
fortnightly and then wonder why the frequency of fly-tipping has suddenly shot
up(!)

I recall owning Elvis's 'Heartbreak Hotel' on an HMV 78, which used to be

My mum had "Teddy Bear" which was one of the first long playing records ever
released, or "RCA Microgroove Recording" as it said on the label. It was
bloody awful. Sounded worse than a 78 and had only four tracks on each 12"
side. We left it behind in the garage when we moved house many years later.
Probably not worth anything anyway. It's fun seeing all the Peggy Lee and
Dean Martin albums she used to own being re-released on budget label CD.

Interesting times indeed, I wonder if the mention of the 'Embassy' label
will bring back any memories to the 'not so well off back then' contributors
to the newsgroup?

I do possess a single-sided 10 inch 78 recording of Caruso
singing La Donna e Mobile.

Correction; 80RPM. Must have been recorded before the 78 standard.

Some were, in fact vinyl. I have a copy of 'My Old Man's A Dustman'
by Lonnie Donegan on 78rpm pressed on vinyl. Very rare 78 from 1960,
which was the last year for 78 production in the uk. Carried on in
S. Africa up to around 1964 and in India to around '67/'68. These
were still shellac though.

Tiny Tim bizarrely released a ten-inch 78 in 1970. Even more
bizarrely, it comprised jingoistic UK war songs. It was vinyl, and
I'm fairly sure it was microgroove rather than coarsegroove (but with
a coarse pitch and so looked rather like a 12-in 45rpm 'remix'
single).

Surely that was "Tiptoe through the Tulips"?

I stand corrected, I had no idea they existed.

And if you're lucky enough to find one in very good condition, they
sound fantastic too. Better than the 45 equivalent.
