Look on the bright side, Beck. If you keep turning the switch on/off all
the
time, then that small piece of plastic will eventually wear out and then
the
TV won't switch on at all and you'll have to call someone out for £40/hour
to
fix it.

If the remote goes through use of the standby button (incredibly unlikely)
then that's a tenner for a replacement remote.

A TV in standby uses next-to-bugger-all power compared to when it's on.
Stop
believing all the media hype that you're draining the world's energy
reserves
by leaving it on standby and enjoy life. Generators will provide as much
energy as we all need and the only reason it might cost a lot, at the
moment
especially, is because the energy companies are robbing *******s.

But I want to turn it off.

Fill your boots, then, but you're saving less money than it costs to fix the
TV once you break the on/off button and have to call someone out. Still, it's
your bill so that's up to you.

Its not media hype, collectively we can all do something to help.

It is media hype. Collectively we can do nothing to help. See what I said
about mankind's contribution to global warming. It's next to nothing. You're
wasting your time. After the earth's done heating up it'll then spend the next
150 years cooling down and BBC Breakfast's 22nd Century equivalent will be
predicting the start of the next ice age.

However, you'll ignore all of that because you think global warming's a
reality.

On a recycling note, since that seems to be all the rage and the councils want
to empty bins every fortnight instead of weekly like I'm bloody paying them to
do through my exhorbitant council tax rates, if they want me to use less
plastic carrier bags then why does Tesco cram a million of them into my online
order (answer: because to use as few as possible will cause things to damage
each other and then they'll be coughing up refunds) and if some bureaucrat
wants to save trees then stop all the takeaway places shoving unwanted flyers
through my door on a daily basis and stop the free papers coming through my
door each weekend - just tell me where I can view their website, if I really
care to read their freesheet.

That's a pretty self-centered view. "Let's use up all this FINITE

No. I can go a few weeks inbetween deliveries and I time the deliveries so
that they come on the night when I'm about to put the bin bags out for
collection the next morning. Apart from keeping back one or two bags to use
myself, every single one goes in the bin bags.

Judging by what you've said above, I bet my last comment really irks you and
that amuses me immensely because you think you're saving the planet by your
actions when I've explained there's no "saving" of the planet to be done
because of the natural cycle of the Earth.

I think it is Ireland that has virtually removed carrier bags from
supermarkets by taxation. Very few go into landfill there now. As a
result the sales of plastic bin bags (containing more plastic than a
carrier) have soared. (Source Radio 4)

Sounds fair enough. However, if they've taken carrier bags out of the equation
then what happens for grocery deliveries which like to protect items by
putting them into lots of different bags?

So what if they are finite (though strictly speaking, they arent), we'll
stop using them long before we run out, and we are a long long way from
running out of them. Hundreds of years away.

And, FWIW, if everyone in the UK stopped burning fossil fuels , eg we shut
all our factories down, stopped flying, stopped using electricity and gas,
switched OFF our Sky+ boxes (forget standby, thats for wimps), then that is
equal to 3 months of Chinese production today (let alone ina few years
time).

Or in other words, in 100 years time, when the temperature has risen several
degrees (as forecast by the GW proponents), the difference that will make is
a mere 3 months. e.g. , if the temp will be 2 deg C higher in 100 years,
then our stopping ALL consumption, will mean we have another 3 months before
it hits that, and it will only have risen something like 1.999997 degrees or
similar. In other words, The UK don't matter a hill of beans. And these
figures, it should be remembered, come not from the GW sceptics, but from
the proponents! Its a bit like camerons windmill, what was than going to
take, was it 200 years to payback or similar?

Wasn't that just to get the DTT triallists complaining about the
picture quality, so the BBC could prove to Ofcom that they should be
given lots of shiny new multiplexes instead of having to make better
use of what they already have?

I use low-energy lightbulbs because they last longer and save me money.
Putting a digibox into standby overnight makes no real difference whatsoever.

And it's also the people who want to put their digibox into standby who are
switching their TVs off overnight because they object to them being in
standby! What a shame such people have fresh air where brains should be.
