See

Maybe the main land transmitters reach them with a good aerial of UK and
Ireland.

Doesn't the IoM get its BBC programmes from the NorthWest region? I
think there's some system whereby the transmitters on the Island
switch their RBL source to Winter Hill during opt outs rather than
Caldbeck. How would that work post DSO?

The BBC lists suggest that it's only certain transmitters which this
applies to (indicated by a # on the list)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/trans...caldbeck.shtml but I
suspect the lists are incomplete and all of the IoM sites work in this
way, with Douglas being where this switching takes place and the other
sites RBL that tx.

I read a theory that there is a cue dot in the overscan area on the
Winter Hill output when it's opted out which is used to control this
switching.

It does, but the ITV regional template is being used for DSO. Having said that
there have been a couple of tweaks recently, such as ITV from Berwick moving
from Border (Selkirk) to Tyne Tees (Chatton) region.

I've heard similar stories, and I've asked in this and another group about
that opt switching works, but I've never seen it answered.

It always used to be a signal on ICE - on one of the frame blanking lines.

Ah ha, thanks for that. Assuming the all the IOM relays are transposers, the
switching must be within the IF domain, rather than baseband ? Unless, say
Douglas is baseband fed and the others feed off that ?

With the IOM being seperate to main UK with thier own goverment and
broadcasting licencing how do the BBC/UK goverment get money from the IOM
people?

Hope they do not get it free and I and you paying, like the people in
Ireland with good aerials get Uk programmes.

As far as I can remember, Douglas simply switched transposers (so switching
was at RF) and the other relays took their feed from Douglas. But things
may have changed in the last 11 years - since I retired.

Wow, time flies.
Well it must have been years and years since we met then when you were with
the BBC. I seem to think it was at the introduction of Ceefax!

May you long continue to post here.
