So there we are. My Totally Off Topic request for help has resulted in
someone coming on and pointing out the obvious and totally non-surprising
fact that I was off topic, which allowed us to have a jolly enjoyable
session telling him what a prat he was, and then we all exchanged info about
all the funny keys, some of which info I have written down and stuck on the
wall in front of me for future reference.

So all's well that ends well! Ahh, this thread had been like one of those
American programmes where the villain is vanquished and then there's a
period of co-operative creativity and and then at the end happy music plays
and everyone stands in a half circle facing the camera making little quips
and beaming.

Whatever you do, don't hit the INS (insert) key by mistake (as I did once),
the curser will then be inexplicably eating any characters that are unlucky
enough to be in front of it.

Someone will combine a digital camera with one of those projection clocks
so you can project your photos onto the wall in the pub 'real soon now'

Perfectly feasible, with a pocket-sized nuclear power source.

We are getting there. High power LEDs can kick out a fair bit of light
for not that much battery drain. I should think that you could make a
pocket projector to go up to A4 size without much bother.

I wonder if, again, it's due to accidental presses of the Insert key.
However, I can't explain why it won't go back to how it should be. We need
an IT expert, I think.

I used to have a laptop, where the delete key was next to the power
button. After a couple of disasters, I set 'autosave' in Excel and
Word to 1 minute !

I use Agent for newsgroups and fo some reason it always overwrites if
I need to go back. I can't get it to change.

Hmmm I wonder why.

The help files have this:

When editing a message in the composition window, you can type over
characters by switching from the "insert mode" to the "overwrite
mode". To do this, place your cursor at the point where you want to
begin overwriting text, then press the Insert key until you see OVR on
the far right side of the status bar. Now you are ready to type over
the text. To return to the insert mode, press the Insert key again.
OVR will disappear from the status bar and you will no longer type
over existing characters when you enter new text.

This seems to be indepedent of the setting in any other w/p program.

So look down there V Does it say OVR? Then press insert

Unfortunately, the INS key is conveniently situated immediately to the
right of the backspace key. On some keyboards, you can hardly get a
cigarette paper between them.

If, like me, you have to look at the keyboard when you are typing, you
may suddenly realise that you have gone into the 'overwrite' mode, and
overwritten several lines of typing. Invariably, what you have
overwritten was the result of a moment of divine inspiration, and (like
the Lost Chord), can never be recalled.

You probably put this down to that fact that that you have accidentally
touched the INS key. Not so. It's just your computer having a laugh.

Ian.

Or is there a big party with lashings of ice cream and ginger beer?

I once told my sister that was the 'any key', she believed me. ;-)

There's an Allt Street in Rawmarsh (or Parkgate).

Bill

On keyboards that predate the introduction of the Euro if you type Alt
Gr+4 you get the Euro symbol

I suspect you will not find much use for that rthen Bill :-)
