TOT Smoking Ban 2007

Now before you all flame me, I'm not a smoker and never have been, but I
find this unbelievable!

From the middle of this year, there will be a total ban on smoking in public
places. No pubs or clubs can even have a smoking room for people who fancy
a fag!

The only place to be allowed such a smokers room is, guess where? The house
of commons !!!!

most smokers tend to be in total denial - they refuse to accept that they
are drug addicts.
as such they should be glad they can indulge their habit anywhere - they
shouldnt be able to rub our noses in it anywhere.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with children to
smoke at all and a total ban on any public smoking.

Do you have a source for this? It is possible that part of the Palace
of Westminster will be excempt because it is a residence.

Googling a bit I find that The Palace of Westminster is exempt because
it is a royal palace. However this report from The Observer says that
there will be a ban on smoking in parliament.

Sunday December 24, 2006
The Observer

Smoking ban extends to 'royal' Commons

MPs have lost their battle to stop next year's ban on smoking in
England affecting the House of Commons.

Because the precincts of parliament are technically a royal palace, it
is exempt from the law that will see smoking outlawed in pubs,
restaurants and other public places from next July. The Commons
administration committee, a group of MPs who oversee decisions about
the running of Westminster, concluded last year that it should set an
example by voluntarily adopting the ban, but four of its members -
three Tories and one Labour - formally objected, leaving the final
decision to a commission run by the Speaker of the Commons Michael
Martin.

However, it is shortly expected to announce that the ban will be
introduced throughout parliament, including in MPs' private offices.

Tory backbencher Derek Conway had opposed the parliamentary ban,
alongside Tory committee members Greg Knight and Andrew Robathan and
Labour's Brian Donohoe. 'Where staff are involved it has to be banned,
but in individual offices I think it should be a matter for MPs, not
for the nanny state,' he said. 'I shall lean out of my window
overlooking the Thames and puff away.'

The logical thing then would be to ban alcohol - considering just how many
are addicted to that. And it's one of the most dangerous recreational
drugs available. But this government takes a very different view on that
- relaxing the supply rules to the point where there might as well be
none. And although other's smoke may be unpleasant, it's nothing compared
to the behaviour of many drunks.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with children

Likewise drinking. It's all too easy for many to become addicted - and
things will get worse since it's getting cheaper all the time.

difficult to stop Betty from smoking. Actually, she can continue to smoke

Perhaps you should start up another TOT thread about whether or not
drinking should be banned. This one is about smoking. Are you trying
to imply that, because you believe drinking has worse effects, the
smoking ban shouldn't be implemented?

Also, since you're dragging drink into it, it's worth pointing out
that it is already illegal to drink to the point where other members
of the public become adversely affected. The new law will only bring
smoking into line with this.

Cheers,

Colin.

I was referring to the English regulations. I don't know that they've
changed anything in Scotland. From what I've seen, the Scottish
regulations are far stronger than the English ones - instant fines for
instance - so I doubt if they'll change anything.

If you can smell the toilets consider how much care that the publican
gives to other hygiene matters. Is that same bit of rag used to clean

toilet bowls?

Once a few pubs have been cleaned properly people may start realise
that the pub trade didn't always buy a ****ty brown colour paint to

probably, but the smell of the "great unwashed" suddenly becomes
very obvious - as does the smell from the toilets.

So they should clean the toilets then. It's really not been a
problem in non-smoking bars I've been to.

Toilets can be cleaned before opening time and they can stink by
closing time. It depends on the habits of the users.

stopping you from smelling nasty lavatories is one of the worst
excuses for smoking i ever did read.

It wasn't an 'excuse', I don't smoke - I don't like smoking. But,
it is a fact of life in some pubs that tobacco smoke masks the smell
from the toilets.

If smell-masking is all fag-smoke was ever doing for us, I guess Air
Wick could single-handedly save the post-ban situation for us all...

"For us all"? Are Airwick going to produce cigs that don't produce any smoke
then?

Now before you all flame me, I'm not a smoker and never have been,
but I find this unbelievable!

From the middle of this year, there will be a total ban on smoking in
public
places. No pubs or clubs can even have a smoking room for people who
fancy
a fag!

most smokers tend to be in total denial - they refuse to accept that
they are drug addicts.

So is everybody that wants a cup of tea or coffee in the morning to perk
themselves up, but somehow they don't have the same stigma.

as such they should be glad they can indulge their habit anywhere -

That has to be the most idiotic thing that's ever been said on Usenet,
surely?

they shouldnt be able to rub our noses in it anywhere.

You were going to get your no-smoking pubs, so you would've thought people
like yourself would be happy. But oh no, smoking pubs shouldn't be allowed
because the Nazis don't smoke.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with
children to smoke at all and a total ban on any public smoking.

I'd prefer a total ban on Nazis, personally.

Best law that has ever been passed in Scotland where we have had
it in place for a year.

You can now smell things other than smoke in bars....

It's not that much of a problem, really, and so much better than the
stink of cigarettes.

Indeed. And the health of bar workers will improve as well.

And the people visiting them.

If there were non-smoking pubs then you would have been free to go to one of
those.

There are hardly any, due to laziness on the part of pub owners mostly.

It's really liberating to go to a
country (e.g. Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Norway, Italy etc.) and
simply not to have to worry about smoke...

You "worry" about passive smoking?

I worry about the smell.

The law could have made sure there would be more non-smoking pubs.

What a stupid thing to worry about.

The Italian law in a way was the best.

Not at all- especially if you hate the smell.
