Now before you all flame me, I'm not a smoker and never have been, but I
find this unbelievable!

From the middle of this year, there will be a total ban on smoking in
public places. No pubs or clubs can even have a smoking room for
people who fancy a fag!

The only place to be allowed such a smokers room is, guess where? The
house of commons !!!!

Actually smoking is still to be allowed in *all* royal palaces.

and, interesting, on a theatrical stage if needed for artistic integrity.

Best law that has ever been passed in Scotland where we have had it in
place for a year.

You can now smell things other than smoke in bars....

It's not that much of a problem, really, and so much better than the
stink of cigarettes.

Not so, according to many.

Indeed. And the health of bar workers will improve as well.

And the people visiting them. It's really liberating to go to a country
(e.g. Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Norway, Italy etc.) and simply not to
have to worry about smoke...

I bet you most people prefer not smelling of cigarettes.

probably, but the smell of the "great unwashed" suddenly becomes very
obvious - as does the smell from the toilets.

So they should clean the toilets then. It's really not been a problem in
non-smoking bars I've been to.

most smokers tend to be in total denial - they refuse to accept that
they are drug addicts. as such they should be glad they can indulge
their habit anywhere - they shouldnt be able to rub our noses in it
anywhere.

The logical thing then would be to ban alcohol - considering just how many
are addicted to that. And it's one of the most dangerous recreational
drugs available. But this government takes a very different view on that
- relaxing the supply rules to the point where there might as well be
none. And although other's smoke may be unpleasant, it's nothing compared
to the behaviour of many drunks.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with children
to smoke at all and a total ban on any public smoking.

Likewise drinking. It's all too easy for many to become addicted - and
things will get worse since it's getting cheaper all the time.

Perhaps you should start up another TOT thread about whether or not
drinking should be banned. This one is about smoking. Are you trying
to imply that, because you believe drinking has worse effects, the
smoking ban shouldn't be implemented?

Also, since you're dragging drink into it, it's worth pointing out
that it is already illegal to drink to the point where other members
of the public become adversely affected. The new law will only bring
smoking into line with this.

Cheers,

Colin.

I was referring to the English regulations. I don't know that they've
changed anything in Scotland. From what I've seen, the Scottish
regulations are far stronger than the English ones - instant fines for
instance - so I doubt if they'll change anything.

Toilets can be cleaned before opening time and they can stink by closing
time. It depends on the habits of the users.
