I AM impressed by HD-DVD!
 

I posted a message in this group "Unimpressed by HD-DVD" a few
days ago. Some suggested that my DVD player settings where not
set properly. The letterbox'd picture was about 1/2 of my
65" screen, and did not look that great. I have the HD-DVD
player which connects to your XBox 360. Well, I neglected to
set this baby in HD mode. There's a switch on the cable, and
I set it to HDTV. Then I set the system to 1080p, and now
movies and games look spectacular! Thanks for all the
advice.

Glad to hear that you now have things set up properly. HD DVD and BluRay
both deliver outstanding video, so it had to be a setup issue or defective
disk/player you were previously viewing.

Smarty, I burned my first HDV home video using the setup you
recommended. Everything works great!

Thanks again for the tips.

I am surprise, though, (academic in my case) that the Toshiba player
offers a 1080i setting but not a 1080p.

I knew you would be impressed, because anyone who has seen the HD DVD's I've
made has a dropped jaw and says something like "Holy S**T I can't believe
how sharp that is.....". Next try dropping some hi-res photos from any
digital still camera into a slide show. Good 4 to 8 megapixel images are an
excellent source. Believe it or not, they look even better than the HDV
footage.....

As regards 1080p....only the most expensive Toshiba HD-XA2 offers it. Since
the HD-XA2 costs a premium of $500 over the unit you ordered ($850 versus
$350) I would say it is a waste of money for a small gain.

Have fun with making high def HD DVDs. I have made about 200 using 3
different methods / software including both PC and Mac, and the approach I
recommended is definitely the way to go.

I have already seen how good still photos can look. My Sony LCD
projection set has a slot for Sony memory sticks and plays slide shows.

The day after I bought the unit, Amazon dropped the price to $300. I

with their own yellow bar code sticker!

Also... get some really good demo discs, not that King Kong isn't.

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns are both incredible.

Glad to hear that the Toshiba HDDVD player is now at $300. I hope they blow
the doors off of BluRay marketing and pricing in the process.

And sorry the yellow sticker problem arose. Wonder if Amazon might issue you
some type of credit again? It really is their fault.

made by Jim Gilliland. Maybe a little heat from a hair dryer will allow you
to remove the yellow sticker.....

Lots of clever people here. I did the hair dryer gig and the yellow
sticker peeled off without any damage to the primary sticker.

Sure beats going to court. ;-)

I received my first two HD-DVD disks from Netflik yesterdy.

One is the new movie "The Good Sheppard." It is one of those two-sided
disks. Only the standard def side would play.

I called Toshiba tech support today about it and they suggested I needed
a firmware update, but it would take a bit of time to send it as they
are backlogged.

I then tried the Internet update, but I couldn't make it connect, and I
tried all the tricks that work with my TiVO.

So, I resorted to cleaning a supposedly new disk and, presto, it played
HD-DVD.

That movie sure looks great in high definition.

Admittedly, I only saw it in theater - so I could not pause,
backspace, turn on subtitles, or just plain stop it! So your
