Do I need Direct TV set top box?

My TV has both QAM and ATSC built-in, but they said I still need
Direct TV set top, why so?

Also, I think I want to install an outdoor antennas, since it costs a
lot for TV and I don't want TV much, anyone is successfully use
antennas in san diego, CA?

Who are "they"? Do you intend to subscribe to DirecTV's service?

If you want to watch Direct TV you would. I would be VERY surprised if
their signals aren't encrypted (a modern day equivalent to the "secret
messages" in old spy movies) and the receiver and activation card are
what converts the signal to a conventional Component, composite,
S-Video, ATSC or NTSC format.

If signals are strong enough all you would need for over the air
reception would be a properly installed antenna and lead to connect it
to your TV.

Your QAM tuner would pick up the channels that are distributed "in the
clear" over the cable TV system. There are usually encrypted channels
beyond those unencrypted ones in the budget service tier though.

Depends on your distance from the transmitters and the geography in your
immediate area AND between you and the transmitter. Check
http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx for an estimation of what
antennas can pick up what over the air stations at your location.

thank you all for the info -- I call Toshiba, they said I need set top
for Direct TV.
I am current their customer, just for the boy for his movies. The
result shows
few stations if I am able to pick it up. Couldn't do it in previous
place. Here, it
is very hilly, I even have hard time pick up radio signal.
