Strange problems with OPPO 971H
I sent this off to Oppo support, but wondered if anyone else might have some
insight before they return to work on Monday: I just bought model OPDV971H through Amazon.com and I have two problems. First, when any scene fades to black, there is a faint but distracting ghostly and pixilated image of the last frame of the scene so the screen never fades completely to black. I never realized how often scenes in movies fade to black until I got this DVD player, so at least I learned something. However, it's pretty annoying. I have had the TV, a Sony KDF-E55A20, for over a year, and know it isn't something that the TV does. Is something set wrong? The TV has an HDMI input and is connected to the DVD player with the DVI to HDMI cable that came with the player. The second problem I have is that I can't change the resolution from 480p, but the TV is capable of 480i, 720p and 1080i. The picture doesn't come close to filling the screen, it's only about 2/3 the size of the TV screen, and it's squeezed horizontally.. I went into the menu and tried all four TV display settings: Wide, Wide/SQZ, Normal/LB and Normal/PS. Wide showed the 2/3 picture, the other three settings simply reduced the height of the picture even more. I also tried pressing the DVI button, but the only one I didn't get the circle-with-a-slash-through-it was 480p. I have used this TV with 720p and 1080i signals through an HDMI cable on many occasions. What's really strange is the title screen of the DVD is the full height of the TV screen, but no wider than the movie itself. I powered down the unit, connected it to the TV through component cables, and turned it on again, with the exact same result. Also, I noticed that even when the Oppo is set to "Wide" screen, the Oppo DVD player's screensaver is in 4:3 format, leaving wide gaps on either side of the screen... I plugged my HD-DVR onto the same HDMI port on the TV and it displays fine, full screen, so it can't be the TV? Any ideas? |

I may have seen this now and again. It hasn't been a big problem for me. The second problem I have is that I can't change the resolution from 480p, but the TV is capable of 480i, 720p and 1080i. Playback must be stopped before you can change resolutions. Also: the aspect controls only work for the upscaled resolutions: 720p and 1080i, not 480p. At 480p the display must handle the aspect control, which on my display is never quite right. You want Wide/Sqz on the Oppo, 720p or 1080i. Once I was able to set it to 720p, I put it on Wide/Sqz and the ghost images disappeared, and of course now the picture is full-screen and looks WAY better. The most useful thing was the post you gave, from which I found a link to Oppo's site, and finally found the FAQ I had searched for and somehow missed before. It answered all my questions. I only wish this DVD drive was region-free, but I can always strip out the region coding on my PC and burn them to a new DVD. |

All the Oppos can be made region-free by entering a code with the remote: setup 9210 0 setup You'll have to repeat this if you ever update the firmware (something I always forget). All the settings are wiped by new firmware. They also play PAL discs and do PAL-NTSC conversion. -Bill -- Sattre Press History of Astronomy http://sattre-press.com/ During the 19th Century by Agnes M. Clerke http://sattre-press.com/han.html |

I type in 92100 and press setup again but nothing seems to happen. Should I see the numbers being entered on the screen? Since you put the second 0 on its own line, I thought maybe I was supposed to press return after 9210 before entering the second 0, but nothing happens with that either... I put in a foreign DVD and got the message "Wrong region"... |

I put in a foreign DVD and got the message "Wrong region"... Never mind. For some reason, the first five times I pressed setup then 9210, nothing happened. Then I found out from http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/print...0726&p=9044576 that a secret menu is supposed to pop up after I presses 9210. I tried once more and this time, the menu came up. Apparently I typed the number wrong the first five times. But it's just as you said: MAKE REGION FREE: The latest shipment of units are not region free. To change to region free mode do this: 1.. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page 2.. Enter 9210 on the remote 3.. A secret menu will pop up 4.. Select 0 to 6 in region code (0 is region free) 5.. Press Setup on remote again to exit Sweet, I love this unit! |

Even the Oppo screen saver leaves ghost images on the screen when you have that setting on. I was watching a DVD that appears to have been made with an 8-mm video camera from the 1960s and there was so much snow at times I thought it was a documentary about the Arctic. The high noise reduction setting cleared it up a lot, probably eliminated 90% of the snow. |

It was a film about a musician. It's just that the film was of such god-awful quality, it was full of snow--so much that it seemed like some other movie that one would expect to have a lot of real snow in it, like say for example an Arctic documentary. |
