DVD player doesn't scale video to 16:9

Hi,
I have a old inexpensive DVD player. I tried to hook it up to a LCD
TV via component cable. The only thing I could get out of this setup
is that the 480p video was stretched and I had two black bands on top
and bottom.
I assumed that my DVD player would automatically change the
scaling. It doesn't have any setting to change the screen size from
4:3 to 16:9 . Do other DVD players have this feature where they can
set it?

Thanks.

Every player I have seen has a setup option for 4:3 and 16:9. This was part of
the DVD standard from day 1, so I'm surprised there is a player that doesn't
have that control.

Do have the manual? Any chance of a hidden menu? What model is it? You might
find user notes at videohelp.com.
