If your HDTV has VGA or S-Video inputs you should have no problems. You can find cables at many places, like Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. |

S-Video I think doesn' t help to upconvert. Would a VGA cable work?, ie, is it used for high quality? Is there a VGA to Component video cable ?? Thanks. |

SVGA may support HD (over 720i) if the HDTV has a SVGA input. Then there are also usb external devices that can convert your laptop's output to whatever cable you want to use on the HDTV. But...what's inside the laptop? Can it produce an HD signal to the cable you use? What kind of graphics card is it using (Not a real card of course). Nate |

The DVD is 480p, so it would have to be upconverted somewhere. The HDTV might do as good a job as anything else. VGA is 480 pixels vertically. |

It would be a pretty lame laptop that did _not_ output better than 640x480 VGA.. Why put an external monitor on the laptop if its crippled to vanilla VGA? Initially I used VGA out of my HTPC for the first couple of months. Then I went to an ATI 9600 with DVI out. The DVI and VGA were both the same resolution (1280x720) With the VGA I could see a trace of smearing on vertical lines from low grade cable, but flawless with DVI. BTW, I'm a video engineer by trade and to me a 'trace' would be un-noticeable to most folks unless pointed out. Keeping the cable short will minimize the degradation. VGA to component is not hard but I don't think it can be done with passive mixing I.E it needs power. GG |
