HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray -- Who's Winning?

This is probably an artifact due to the release of PS3. Most people
will buy a Blu-Ray movie when they buy a PS3. You know, I got a
Blu-Ray drive so I have to buy a Blu-Ray movie to see how it works.
When PS3 sales level off, so will the Blu-Ray sales. There are still
more HD-DVD players in homes.

Didn't the PS/3 buyers get a coupon for a free bluray? I imagine this
accounts for many of the sales. And the 2:1 is only over a 6 week period
to my understanding.

It makes sense that a huge influx of Blu-Ray players would result in a
huge rise in people buying Blu-Ray discs. It's most likely an initial
spike that will even out in a few months.

One of the things that will hurt Blu-Ray is the dismal sales of PS3.
I'm sure Sony thought that the PS3 would perhaps be the deciding
factor in the disc wars and it hasn't worked out that way. Only one
PS3 game title is in the current top 10. Ironically, there are two
PS2 titles there. Right now, game developers will become more
interested in having their games out for the Wii.

Sony is lucky that Nintendo didn't offer a HD-DVD option for the Wii.
If they did that, the war could already be over and PS3 sales would be
even worse than they are. In any case, Nintendo must be in a state of
bliss over their new dominance in the game console business.

Stay tuned.

Not true. One of the reasons that I was happy to buy my kids the PS2
was because it was also a DVD player. I decided to opt out on the PS3
because I didn't want to commit to the Blu-Ray format. I assume that
some of the problems with PS3 sales has to do with the format war.

LG has a new model that plays both formats.

The "real story:

Sony had a policy in place against mastering blu-ray titles for the porn
industry. Thus the industry announced that it was going to release its
initial product in the HD-DVD format. Soon after this news went public
the
Sony policy was changed. Today, with Blu-Ray disk sales 2:1 against
HD-DVD,
and with the ability to master in either format, do you really think the
industry will avoid releasing product in the Blu-Ray format?

Let's see. The only reason they now support me is because someone else
did. Before that they wanted to put me out of business. So now I should
support them and maybe drive my original supporter out of business so they
can then put me out of business if they chose too. Hmmm...:-)

On a personal note, I don't care about the porn industry. But I sure as
hell wouldn't produce any porn on Sony format.

The porn industry has a lot of small operations that produce two or
three movies a week and they want their stuff on the shelf as soon as
possible. They will go with HD-DVD because it's cheaper and faster to
market.

The bigger porn producers who can afford to spend more money might
decide to use Blu-Ray because it offers the possibility of more
features, like different camera angles on the same shot.

In business, loyalty usually is trumped by profits. If the porn
industry realizes it can make more money by using Blu-Ray it will use
it.

So what you are saying is if there are 10 million blue ray players in the
market and say 2 million HD-DVD the porn industry will not cater for the
market with 5 times as many potential customers? I think not!

Actually, they don't, as long as you consider "LG has a new model" to mean
that there's someplace you can purchase one.

Saw one in my local Best Buy. Decent looking unit. But, not worth $1,200.00
to me.
I think I'll sit this one out for a while.

Right now, my kids (raised on PS2) would much prefer the Wii because
that's what all their friends have. Obviously, console sales also
effect game sales. Rumor has it that Wii will soon offer a HD-DVD
option and if they do, that will be another nail in the Blu-Ray
coffin.

The Wii cannot handle HD-DVD. It is just an overclocked Gamecube. This is
why it has no HD now...

Also, XBox 360 has sold over 10 million units. I don't know how many
of them sold with the HD-DVD player, but that is one factor that gives
HD-DVD the edge at this time. HD-DVD has more units in homes now than
Blu-Ray.

Again, storage space would be the only conern for games. If HD-DVD loses,
then the discs would still be useful for games.

A final factor in HD-DVD favor is that the porn industry has decided
to use the HD-DVD format. The porn industry is bigger than the legit
film industry and this will also effect what hardware people want to
buy. The porn industries' use of VHS in favor of Betamax was a factor
in the Betamax's demise.

If you say so.

Future Shop here in Canada says they have an exclusive on them.

They're $1499 Canadian in their catalogue but there is no information on
the store stock (literally no information, not zero inventory), which
implies the shipments are actually on the way to the stores.
