best cable for hd video
i'm a little confused. i know the hdmi cable is simple 'cause you get the audio and video in one cable. but i run my audio straight to the reciever/ amp, and i want to run the video directly to the hd monitor. i'm thinking of using the component video cables. but which is better for video? hdmi or component video? i don't mind running an hdmi cable (even though i won't be using it for the audio) if it's better for the video...

HDMI and component are roughly equivalent in their ability to carry HD video. Depending on the implementation, people sometimes prefer one over the other with a specific combination of gear. Try both, use a calibration disc, and trust your eyes. Note that the industry wants you to use HDMI and is making life hard for component. No SD-DVD upscaling allowed over component (there are workarounds). In the future HD-DVD and Blu-Ray HD signals may be disabled for component. -Bill -- Sattre Press In the Quarter http://sattre-press.com/ by Robert W. Chambers http://sattre-press.com/itq.html |

The answer is "it depends." When sent via HDMI, your monitor/TV is decoding the digital signal. When sent via component, the source device is decoding the digital signal. If the source device has a better decoder, you may get a better picture via component than via HDMI but, then again, you might not - there's lots of processing going on in both devices. If you want the best picture with your particular setup, you'll have to try both ways and see which looks best. |

Some say HDMI is better. though I have not seen much of a difference. I prefer the HDMI just due to it being less cable. I'd just run the HDMI, and turn the TV speakers off, run you audio to the amp with either optical or co-ax. |

You're not quite clear what you are running. I assume that you want to run
HDMI to your Monitor/TV, but want audio to your Receiver/AMP. But you do not state what your are running from? DVD Player or Satellite? Both of which have extra Audio out from which you can use to connect to your Receiver/AMP. The newer AMPs do have HDMI pass through so they can extract the Audio from the HDMI cable before passing it the Video to the TV. Or you can always use the Audio out from the TV itself. (ie vcr- svideo, dvd- component video) all the audio goes to the amp. just wondering what the best video cable for the hd satellite box was? (using optical for the audio) DVD Player or Satellite? Just don't spend alot of money on HDMI cables. The cheap ones work just as
well. I bought an audio switch (radio Shack) that lets me switch DVD audio to
TV or receiver amplifier. Works good. |
