As a great believer in a quiet life and Keeping It Simple..... why not
just install a plain vanilla BT line for your Dad.

Ok you'll need to find something else to rant about, but your poor Dad
will get Sky !!

It does seem to be an expensive way to solve the problem - considering that
he`d have to pay the line rental for a phone line that most likely wouldn`t
get any use.

Could you borrow a very long extension lead and plug it into a
neighbours just for installation? Or in before the exchange?

My Dad wanted High Definition TV, so I did all the research and
decided on a lovely Panasonic Viera @ £1000. Of course he also needed
a hi def source, so I also organised Sky HD, but they wont let him
have it!

Sky installer came today and refused to fit the box because he his
phone is on a network. Basically he has to dial '9' as a prefix and
the installer could find no way to insert a pause after the 9 which
would make the box work, and thus refused to install it. This of
course was AFTER he had drilled the hole in the front of Dad's house.

I cannot believe this is a fait accompli. Surely Sky arent going to
give up on a £300 install and £500 odd a year just for the sake of a
bit of software that can cope with this situation. My dad cannot be
the first this has happened to. Has anyone here heard of this problem,
and has anyone got around it? Will Sky+ not function when not
connected to the phone line?

Did the installer try entering "9," as the prefix? A comma is a very
common way of introducing a pause into the dial prefix. By the way, to
get to the option to set the prefix on the box, you have to enter:

'Services'
4,0,1,select
3 (for Telephone settings)

How do you get a 'pause' is the question. How does one get a comma
from the remote control? Just 9 isnt good enough I am afraid

A very good point well made, I didn't think of that bit! I was in
'mobile phone' keypad mode there. There must be a code because otherwise
these things:
http://www.remotecity.co.uk/navigato...ote-p-294.html
wouldn't work. However, that doesnt mean that the telephone settings
will accept the comma of course. I'm stumped at the moment then..

It possible to upgrade an existing Sky digital subscription to Sky HD with Sky+
without a phone connection.

It is certainly easier, though at one point last year they wouldn't do
that either.
