The first thing I did after having it installed was to disconnect it. It whinges at you that you won't be able to get the full range of services, but I have found no problem so far. I can't speak for Sky HD though. HD does function without. The only problem might be that Sky police the connection on HD and multiroom (i.e. check and bill you if you are not connected) a lot more than sky+ and standard. The problem having sky install is that they will not install without a phoneline - even if you unplug it soon as they leave. An indie would not care and it can be DIY'ed. Yeah they do. my Sky dish was installed without a phone line. I assume the instalation guy was a 'proper' sky bloke, he certainly had a sky branded van, and we called sky in the first instand. Fact is I dont have a phone line at all. Since then I have moved, and had a few technical calls with sky. At no point was my lack of land line a problem. Im guessing is that al lot of this is either instalation engineer ignorance or stupidly strict Sky procedure. Personally I'd go for ignorance and/or a jobs worth attitude. Most so called instalation engineers I have come across are pretty low skilled and mostly useless. They know nothing of the technology appart from what thier 'training' course told them. Any deviation from thier 'training' causes some form of brain seizure. Oh, and they are usually so crammed with work for crap pay all they want to do is quickly move through thier task list so they can get home before 10 at night. It was quite amusing when I got called on here some time ago when I had Sky Digital installed by a local installer firm, for £60 and they did it within a few weeks of calling, because Sky's own installers, as you alight to above, were doing that kind of job for free and the installation date would be 8 weeks or so away. Sometimes you get what you pay for. |

I seem to remember this whilst accessing C&W network for free calls to a Vodaphone - doesnt work now :O( and storing it a landline phone memory. Secondly, I dont have any pauses set in my memories in my fax at work it just dials 901612345678 and connects, whats your dad got in his dialup modem before his access number. Dave |

Dave I can't remember unfortunately, but I think it's a 'P'. On my mobile phone to use onetel's override facility, where i can call onetel free from my mobile and pay their rate of like 4 p a minute to call australia, i had to hold down + ( i think) and it changed to 'P' on the screen. if there was no pause it wouldnt work, just like dad's home phone. He could always retire and sell his shop and get a proper phone I suppose |

At worst you can get a local man to install a dish (with at least two LNB feeds). Clearly this will cost more than Sky's £60. Then contact Sky to subscribe to HD if you aren't an existing SD subscriber. Then buy an HD box anywhere, quoting your subscriber number. When you have the box and card, take them to any house in the UK with a Sky dish and a phone line. Connect the dish (one cable is enough: to LNB socket 1) and the phone lead. Ring Sky and ask to have your HD card/box activated. Within a few minutes the Sky channels should decode: you should wait until they do anyway. Once they do then you can disconnect the lot, take it home and reconnect it without the phone lead. The phone lead will NEVER be required once the card/box are activated, unless you get multiroom. And all this just goes to show how incredibly stupid Sky are for putting pointless yet easily surmountable problems in the way of those who merely wish to pay them money.
