My Dad wanted High Definition TV, so I did all the research and
decided on a lovely Panasonic Viera @ £1000. Of course he also needed
a hi def source, so I also organised Sky HD, but they wont let him
have it!

Sky installer came today and refused to fit the box because he his
phone is on a network. Basically he has to dial '9' as a prefix and
the installer could find no way to insert a pause after the 9 which
would make the box work, and thus refused to install it. This of
course was AFTER he had drilled the hole in the front of Dad's house.

I cannot believe this is a fait accompli. Surely Sky arent going to
give up on a £300 install and £500 odd a year just for the sake of a
bit of software that can cope with this situation. My dad cannot be
the first this has happened to. Has anyone here heard of this problem,
and has anyone got around it? Will Sky+ not function when not
connected to the phone line?

Sky+ definitely *does* function when not connected to a phone line. The
first thing I did after having it installed was to disconnect it. It
whinges at you that you won't be able to get the full range of services,
but I have found no problem so far.

I can't speak for Sky HD though.

HD does function without. The only problem might be that Sky police the
connection on HD and multiroom (i.e. check and bill you if you are not
connected) a lot more than sky+ and standard.

The problem having sky install is that they will not install without a
phoneline - even if you unplug it soon as they leave.

An indie would not care and it can be DIY'ed.

As a great believer in a quiet life and Keeping It Simple..... why not
just install a plain vanilla BT line for your Dad.

Ok you'll need to find something else to rant about, but your poor Dad
will get Sky !!

It does seem to be an expensive way to solve the problem - considering that
he`d have to pay the line rental for a phone line that most likely wouldn`t
get any use.

I am pretty sure you can add a dialling prefix. It is in one of the
service
menus.

The OP's installer was well aware of that and was in the menu, but
didn't know how to add a pause after the prefix. Many phone systems need
a pause between dialing "9" for an outside line, before you get a
dialing tone. You ought to be able to get it to insert pauses, "recall"
presses etc all in the prefix menu if it's written properly.

I see. Given the quality of the subbies they often use it could just be
someone who hasn't read the manual.

I'd be screaming blue murder if the guy just left after where he'd got
to so far. Hope you get it sorted, though, although it'll be a pain to
find someone at Sky with an ounce of intelligence who understands the
issue and how to resolve it in order to send a guy out to do what the
first guy should've done.

Bill you what for HD? There is no HD penalty payment for not having
the phone connected, unlike multiroom or a standard "free"
installation. The phone connection requirement for standard
installations can be waived for a £25 payment anyway so why not for
Sky+ and HD?

This is more likely to be the crux of the issue, though someone here
managed to activate a Sky+ recently without a phone connection.

I can see nothing in my Sky+ manual about installing a pause in the
prefix. Does anyone have an HD manual to check for me? I am not going
to ring Dad and say 'pay BT to install a new phone line' if there is a
simpler and cheaper way around this ludicrous restriction.

Will a second, independent confimation do you? If so, consider it confirmed

Ed is clearly not aware that you must never, but never, query Jomtien. He
towers over the Sky newsgroups like a colossus.

I don't think it would be in the retail manual - if it is anywhere it would
be in the installers manual.

Yeah they do. my Sky dish was installed without a phone line. I assume
the instalation guy was a 'proper' sky bloke, he certainly had a sky
branded van, and we called sky in the first instand. Fact is I dont
have a phone line at all.

Since then I have moved, and had a few technical calls with sky. At no
point was my lack of land line a problem.

Im guessing is that al lot of this is either instalation engineer
ignorance or stupidly strict Sky procedure. Personally I'd go for
ignorance and/or a jobs worth attitude. Most so called instalation
engineers I have come across are pretty low skilled and mostly
useless. They know nothing of the technology appart from what thier
'training' course told them. Any deviation from thier 'training'
causes some form of brain seizure. Oh, and they are usually so crammed
with work for crap pay all they want to do is quickly move through
thier task list so they can get home before 10 at night.
