HD via cable

Hi! I'm planning on getting on subscribing to a cable HD service. Does those
cable boxes or DVRs come with HDMI connections? If not ,wouldn't the picture
quality be better with it?

Some do, not all. THEORETICALLY, the picture is better
with HDMI as compared to component. Ain't necessarily so.

Depends on which model DVR or STB box you get. Comcast is a very large
cable company (cobbled together from many gobbled up cable franchises)
and each franchise area may have a different line-up of Motorola or
Scientific Atlanta STBs or DVRs. The odds are that the DVR will have a
HDMI port if it a newer unit. Ask Comcast to bring you a HDMI equipped
box or stop by their office and ask for one.

But the picture quality for HDMI vs component is often very similar.
Some people have switched back to component from HDMI because they ran
into copy protection flag problems with some TV models not working
correctly with some STBs.

It all depends, the HD Comcast box we have (SCiAtlanta 3250 without DVR) has
component and DVI ouputs so you need a DVI to HDMI cable). There appears to
be little or no advantage to the DVI HDMI input over the component hook up.

I think the Comcast boxes with DVR have HDMI but have no experience with
them.

HDMI vs component is a frequent topic of discussion on avsforum.com.
The comparison results depend on the signal source, the STB or
receiver/tuner, and the HD TV. Some people see a better or slightly
better picture with HDMI, some do not. Too many variables for anyone to
state with authority that one will look better than the other for you.
Try both and see which you like better.

I have an SA8300HD with Time Warner and when I first got the box, I
was told the HDMI output wasn't enabled. I asked again a few months
ago and they said it was active but that they were still having
problems with the sound. I've stuck with component cables.

Now I have to make the decision over again because after months of
fence-sitting, I'm having Dish Network installed this weekend.
