Sky Anytime snooping in your PC?
I have been having problems with large amounts of data LEAVING my PC. I have
run MacAfee for virii, good Malware and Spyware finders, Registry cleaners etc etc and still the info was pouring out of my PC. Well call me old fashioned, but after a couple of days of this I was becoming paranoid. I found a neat little programme called Network Traffic Monitor (from a guy called Nico Cuppen) in 20 seconds it identified a programme called KService.exe as the naughty programme sending data by the barrow load away from my beloved computer sending to 86.150.205.176 I further bit of investigation revealed that said programme was part of a compulsory add on to SKY ANYTIME. Is it just me, or do you think that someone was spying on my Internet usage or is it my imagination?? As a precaution I have deleted Sky Anytime and all its associated programme and files, and guess what, No more data drain....how strange. Any one else had similar adventures??? |

Sky Anytime shares its files via a Peer to Peer network if I understand its working correctly. Hence any files you download are made available to other people. Andy |

Andy Andy, it could share files via carrier pigeon for all I care....but it should only do it when I want it to. This data drain was happening without my consent and definitely without me asking Sky for any film or content download. Whatever was going on amounted to 220Megabytes on Sunday afternoon...that's a lot of piers or pigeons, whatever way you look at it :-) |

This data drain was happening without my consent No it wasn't, you agreed to it when you signed up for Sky Anytime. http://anytime.sky.com/terms/terms_pc.aspx "8. Uploading Content If you download and save content to your computer system (a "File"), during the license (sic) period for the relevant File, we may upload parcels of content from the File from your computer system for the purpose of transferring Files to other users of the Service." and definitely without me asking Sky for any film or content download. Are you certain that you or someone else in your household didn't download anything? (it must have been uploading piece of *something*!) When did you install it? Whatever was going on amounted to 220Megabytes on Sunday afternoon...that's a lot of piers or pigeons, whatever way you look at it :-) If that was say 6 hours then I make that an upload speed of 10.43KB per second. So it wasn't even using 1/3rd of your upload bandwidth. [Standard ADSL is 256Kbps upload (32KB/s). ADSLMax is 448Kbps upload (56KB/s).] HTH 220MB in an afternoon? So are there any limits in the software on this? Is anything configurable? It's just over 30 afternoons that would be approx 6GB . Add in mornings, evenings and nights and you could be looking at 24GB in a month - if you had the computer on all the time ( I don't but I know people who just leave it on the whole time!) . That is a lot of data and would put most people over or very close to any bandwidth cap on its own. If this is the case then I reckon Sky are going to be getting a lot of angry anytime customers anytime soon... Steve |

So are there any limits in the software on this? Is anything configurable? I don't know, I haven't seen the software. But there certainly no limits mentioned in the T&C that I can see! It's just over 30 afternoons that would be approx 6GB . If this is the case then I reckon Sky are going to be getting a lot of angry anytime customers anytime soon... Er, why? They could only be angry if they haven't read and understood the T&C, and it was a "surprise" that their PC was uploading with no limits. And if they are using the service without having read and understood the T&C, then they only have themselves to blame. Its all fair and good for those geneii in the group who are highly computer literate, but most ov us users have basic knowledge (which is growing, thanks to the kind people in this group) File sharing means nothing to me, and don't go harping on about Terms and Conditions.....I erroneously thought Sky could be trusted, and not use my computer as some sort of freebee relay point, using my bandwidth and slowing down said computer |

Most likely you`d have a much slower service if all the data came from Sky rather than via P2P - if you choose to install software on your PC without reading the T&C then you don`t really have any right to complain when the software does exactly what it said it would do. -- Items on ebay: http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZscousesifinQQhtZ-1 |

Fine, if you'll stop harping on about Sky using your bandwidth. Silly me, and there I was thinking that Newsgroups where a place to share and help other in a spirit of camaraderie. A place where you can air your concerns without fear of ridicule and somewhere where you can genuinely learn.....but what do I know? Apologies to all the nice friendly people who have helped me understand, but the smart arses in this group make me want puke. |
