I have been waiting since the 50's for tv worth buying an expensive set.
I have standard tvs, but hardly think programming is worth the cost, even
for standard tv definition. So why pay for HDTV?

HDTV is a misleading term coz it can
be either a device (TV), or the video
material itself. the material can
be any or all of: OTA, DVD movie,
cable, satelite, video camera

you don't have to pay for OTA HDTV,
and it's generally quite good. also,
you'll need a half decent roof top
antenna with half decent reception,
otherwise don't bother with OTA

for OTA reception, what you'll need
is a recent TV (either flat screen
or tube, that has HD capability (preferably
720p or 1080i or 1080p)) with both an
analog OTA TV tuner (NTSC), and a digital
OTA TV tuner (ATSC)

Of course, there are people out there who spent $10,000 on an

HDTV just
so they could watch the sun rise over a mountain in 1080i; those

are goofy.

And people who massage their ego by judging the tastes and private

behaviour
of others are of course mature and balanced.

10-4 on that. Thanks for the laugh, Dave

No, $3000 on a D-ILA and I really enjoyed the Pebble Beach Open yesterday.
No sunrise tho.

Your snide superiority says more about you than any of your intended
targets. Grow up.

I said there were a few more. Shark was in that group! ;-)

As was Bones, Eureka (SciFi) and Dresden Files (SciFi)

And then of course, there is sports for all and sundry. Golf and
football are great in HD! And last, but not least, is the Discovery
type stuff.

There is so much that really is good on TV these days, you have to
really want it to suck to take the time to find the bad stuff.

May I put in a word for Veronica Mars on The CW. Like Buffy the Vampire
Slayer and Firefly, an overlooked gem.

Like Firefly you say?? One of my very favorite shows, I have the DVDs
of all the episodes and of course, Serenity, the movie.

CW is on here, but it is a digital sub of one of the other channels and
I don't have a guide listing for it. When is Veronica Mars on?

I watch Letterman and the talking heads on Sunday morning. Aside from
that, I don't find much on TV worth watching.

Talking to you fine folks is much more fun . . .

Since you've been waiting for over 50 years ?.... The programming
keeps changing for better and worse. What I _can_ say about HDTV,
football games look really good, the Rose Parade also. The wide shots
on Men In Trees (Alaska) are pretty impressive and the HD on Nature
(PBS) are pretty good as well.

In your case I'd say find some more good books to read - they're
cheaper and more satisfying anyway.

Right after I got my HDTV (32in Sanyo 4:3 with built in ATSC tuner) I
lived in a town which broadcast the PBS HD feed during primetime and
they had some fantastic programming. I was very enthusiastic about
PBS. Moved to another state and the PBS channel here chooses to
broadcast 4 SD channels 24 hours a day and its some of the worst
programming imaginable. I like educational programming but this is
like PBS used to be in the 70's, with "shows" that are sometimes just
somebody lecturing against an institutionally painted wall. So I
cannot recommend PBS because it is completely dependent on your local
station.

That being said, some of the network shows are worth watching (Heroes,
and CSI even after many seasons pulls out great episodes) and look
great in HD all from my set top antenna. ($12.95 at Wal-Mart).

That depends on what you consider "good"
First of all, I am not interested at all in sports.
Most USA movies are a drag, network sob stories are as well,
and prime time evening, I have not liked in decades.

I will watch some Discovery, Travel Channel, to see places I can
never afford to visit, heck, I have not seen much of my own state (IOWA)!

I am beginning to think that I was born in the wrong country!

You're right, it does depend on what you consider good. I find good
drama, scifi and comedy to fill the bill for me. Throw in a discovery
type show or more and I'm good to go.

You could watch the BBC. Plenty of bland Brit humor and such there...

right country, wrong decade

TV today is written by 24 year olds, for 14 year olds.
The AVERAGE age for the screen writers guild is 34.

And the average IQ of the screen writer is down from the days of Rod Serling
as well.
