I recently got an Olevia 42" LCD HDTV on Black Friday. Can anyone give
me an opinion on which service to go with as far as price, packaged deals, etc.? Time Warner, Direct TV, etc.? BTW, my friend mentioned to me about AT & T. Has anyone subscribed to this? Any opinions on it? Thanks. https://uverse1.att.com/launchAMSSNo...ategoryId=WEB1 |

The best HDTV picture quality without a doubt is free OTA. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

I also vote free.
Although if you don't have an antenna, it might cost you a little to get everything set up initially. Of course, probably not as much as one month of cable service with HD package would cost. My set up cost around $125 for the antenna and mast. $50 for all the cabling and splitter. And $20 for an amp when I split the signal. Ok, that's two months of cable, but you get the idea. I've had this set-up at home for well over a year and don't miss any cable channels. Plus, if you want specific shows now, a few channels are offering episode downloads and streaming off of their site (for free). If you're content with the stuff available on the broadcast networks, then Wes' standard OTA answer is on target. But if you want more then you have to choose between cable, satellite, or one of the TELCO options if you are lucky enough to be in an area where that is offered. I currently have Time-Warner (TWC) and I'm frustrated by the lack of HD programming currently available. The TWC outlet in your area may offer more than mine does. But what is certain is that satellite is in the process of blowing by cable in that area. It's going to be interesting seeing what the cable industry's reaction is going to be to DirecTV's announcement of having 100 HD channels in 2007! Choosing between the satellite providers is also a personal decision depending on programming offerings and price points. If you're a die-hard NFL fan and would like to watch practically any game you want during the season, then DirectTV is your best option since they have the exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. But other than that, I think Dish Network is a good value and they have more HD content NOW. Another possibility is using one of the Canadian providers (google BEV satellite) -- they offer all the U.S. networks' HD feeds and NFL Sunday Ticket. Since I'm in an OTA HD wasteland (no CBS or Fox), I would do this if my TV budget was larger! :-) I can't comment on the telephone companies offerings--perhaps AlanF will chime in on that. Dave |

It is 100% free after you connect to an antenna.
