HDMI /DVI Cables
I am currently hooked up using component cables.
I purchased a HDMI/DVI cable, 1) will this result in a clearer HD picture? 2) Is sound also transmitted from my cable boxes HDMI output to my Televisions DVI input ? |

HDMI/DVI and component are roughly equivalent in their ability to transmit HD video signals. One might be slightly better than the other with a given set of gear, but which is which depends on how well the ports are implemented by the vendors. 2) Is sound also transmitted from my cable boxes HDMI output to my Televisions DVI input ? No. DVI has no audio. -Bill -- Sattre Press In the Quarter http://sattre-press.com/ by Robert W. Chambers http://sattre-press.com/itq.html |

It may...the only to find out is to try it some people see an improvement and some like the component connection better. It did on my equipment..the component connection resulted in a slightly "softer" picture than using a DVI/HDMI cable, even after tweaking the picture settings on the TV. 2) Is sound also transmitted from my cable boxes HDMI output to my Televisions DVI input ? The signal for DVI is the same signal as the HDMI signal without any audio. You will need to connect the audio to your TV as you do using the component video connection. |

(Straight approach. Don't take this as being sarcastic, but just cynical.) I am currently hooked up using component cables. Sounds good. Whats the problem? I purchased a HDMI/DVI cable, Was using component (analog) keeping you awake at night? Worried you weren't getting the "best picture"? Hope you didn't spend more than $10. If you did, you got ripped off. http://www.monoprice.com 1) will this result in a clearer HD picture? I doubt it, but since it is digital it might make you think it is "clearer". 2) Is sound also transmitted from my cable boxes HDMI output to my Televisions DVI input ? Sound would be coming out of the HDMI from your STB, but it is being truncated off your HDMI-DVI cable. DVI doesn't carry audio. Only HDMI carries audio. Don't worry about it. You probably have a nice DD/DTS receiver to go with this nice new HDTV using a seperate fiber cable, anyway? The whole "sound on the same cable" is just another gimmick to get the lemmings to use HDMI. Its about power and control with the entertainment industry. Nothing else. In a perfect world for the consumer, everything use component -- and component only. |

I tried both component and DVI/HDMI connections from my cable STB to my HDTV and there is no question that I get a better picture using the DVI from my STB to the HDMI input on my TV. No matter how I tweaked the picture, using the component connection it always had a "soft" look to it. I've had the TV professionally calibrated ( component and HDMI inputs) and the difference is just as noticeable after the calibration. That being said...I think that the end result of either connection is going to depend on the quality that the TV is capable of achieving. A top of the line set probably has the capability to display the difference more visibly than a lesser set ( may be no difference) visible on something less than top of the line. The best thing to do is to try both connection types and use what looks best to you...that's all that counts in the end. Bob |

I had to give up on HDMI with my cable box. After several hours of viewing
the audio and video get out of sync (bad lip sync). This doesn't happen with the box hooked up via component. Happily, I don't see any loss of picture quality. My TV is a Sony KDF-50E2000 (very common), my cable box is a Motorola DCT6400 (also very common). The cable company can't figure out why this lip-sync problem is happening. Any one else having lip-sync problems with HDMI? -- Bob D. "Bob" wrote in message ... "Eric" wrote in message ... "Postal68" wrote... (Straight approach.
