Does anyone make a portable HDTV
They make small-screen (6"-10") screen DVD players. Does anyone make
them with ATSC tuners built in? |

There should be a number of smaller TVs along with DVD recorders with built-in ATSC tuners hitting the market very soon because the FCC is requiring that all TVs and gear with NTSC tuners after March 1, 2007 must also have an ATSC tuner. How this affects the portable DVD players is not clear to me. They may just drop the NTSC tuners from the cheap models if they have tuners. If you have a laptop and want portable ATSC reception, you could look into USB based ATSC tuners for PCs. Alan F |

As a side note: can an ATSC tuner fit in a laptop PC and/or do any manufacturers supply them. Now, in this case, since most laptop screens are at least 1280x768 pixels, I'm going to assume that ATSC implies HDTV. |

They look like a flash drive with a 75 ohm connector on the other end. Didn't have ANY provision for digital reception (with or without a converter) from a cable TV system though. |

No, ATSC is a digital broadcast standard which covers no less than 18 formats covering 480i SD, 480p, and HD 720p & 1080i. A digital broadcast station can send out - and many do - a HD sub-channel and one or more SD sub-channels. To receive broadcast HD over the air, you must have a ATSC tuner (in the US to be clear), but ATSC does not = HD. Several of the local digital stations that I get over the air have 4 SD sub-channels and no HD - i network (formerly known as Pax) and a local independent "MHz" station. For example, you can have a SD TV with an ATSC tuner which will down convert the resolution of the HD sub-channel and I expect we see a bunch of these hitting the market very soon. For PC and laptops, as I posted there are USB based external ATSC tuners. I have seen one for sale at Best Buy for around $120, IIRC, but I don't know how well it works. This is an area where research before buying is a good idea, as some USB ATSC tuners are likely to work better than others. Alan F |

Darn. Mea culpa again. That's twice in one thread. Ok, let me try a
third time: If I have a laptop with at least 1280x720 pixels for a monitor, and .... Yeah, what you said. |

It was pretty expensive and i don't recall if it also had a dvd player, but it did have an ATSC tuner in it. No, I don't remember where it was, but I probably found it through yahoo shopping searches for atsc something. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

No reason they couldn't and I'm sure they will, but I haven't seen one yet. There's at least one USB tuner about the size of a flash drive, but the one I looked at had poor reviews. I chose a larger unit, but still small enough to stuff in a laptop bag. AutumnWave OnAir GT. Receives NTSC, ATSC and clear QAM. Runs off USB power (no separate power supply). Needs a reasonably fast CPU with DxVA support in video, or a very fast one without DxVA. My 1.7 MHz laptop with DxVA is just fast enough for full-screen display with not much else going on. Full-screen is smooth, but windowed display shows motion artifacts. The software is a work-in-progress, but usable now. I'm happy with it. And yes, the result is HD if that's what's being received and the display has the resolution to show it. Add sufficient HDD storage and you've got yourself a portable HD DVR. |
