Sky Broadband MAX Install

Hi,

My mum has just got sky broadband, received sky netgear hub, had
confirmation that the line has been activited etc.

We went for self install option as i'm normally pretty good with
computers/internet etc. but for some reason the router will not connect to
the internet. Web status page on the netgear just says connecting.

Also the internet light on the router never comes on, no blinking amber and
definitely no solid green light.

I rang sky but got some girl reading from a script who couldnt help and
escalated the fault to the techies who will respond in 3 days?

I've double checked the cables and filters (which at the moment are going
straight into the master BT socket). Also tried with and without the
telephone plugged in.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Scott.

Have you tried with the router connected to the test socket, behind the
customer socket?

Unscrew the faceplate of the master socket (User Removable Panel) if it
looks like the NTE5 found here

as long as you have entered your user id correctly and your password within

if not and you are sure you entered it all ok then its down to sky

Thanks for the sugestions, will give them a try - Although I havent entered
a username and password anywhere yet. The install cd didnt go far enough to
ask me to enter it - as soon as it found that the internet light wasnt on,
it said go back and check everything which I have.

I also couldnt find anywhere in the routers config to type it in, like other
routers have. I just assumed that theses routers are pre programmed with
either your username or a generic useraname.

Cheers
Scott.

Scott - you do not have to enter a user name or password with Sky Broadband,
this is already 'burnt-in' to your Router.

You must try connecting after disconnecting all your internal wiring, this
is achieved by unscrewing the lower faceplate (User Removable Panel) of your
master socket (NTE5) The master socket is the socket where the wires from
outside your house 1st terminate, normally in the hall or front room.

When you have unscrewed it, and pulled it forward carefully, you will find
behind it a test socket - this connects directly on the end of the BT
Network Services Cable - if theRouter still fails to connect here - contact
Sky once again, it is either a BT Network Fault or you have not been
correctly connected in your local telephone exchange.

Steve.

The Netgear will synchronise out of the box without any modifications
being made at all and without any PC being connected. So you clearly
have a synchro problem. The lack of a pulsing amber light indicates
that it can't see the DSL carrier at all.

The meaning of the lights is this:

No light : no DSL carrier found

Pulsing amber : DSL carrier found, synchro in progress

Fixed amber : synchronised with the exchange

Green : connected to the ISP (ie login and password accepted).

There could be several reasons why yours isn't working:

The router could be faulty. Try it in another house where ADSL works.
You do NOT need to configure it and you don't need a PC: just plug it
in and it will synchronise (or at least try to) all on its own. The
green light will NOT come on though; amber only.

The phone cable to the router could be faulty. This has happened to me
several times with Netgears and now I always carry spares. Try another
cable.

The filter(s) could be faulty. Try some others.

You should also try disconnecting ALL the phones, faxes, digiboxes,
video games, Tivos, alarms, etc that are in the house and connected to
the phone.

If the router works in another house and still doesn't in yours then
the odds are that the DSLAM in your exchange needs resetting or is
faulty.

On the Router setup pages check that the "Clone Mac Address" is enabled, if
it is try disabling it, if that doesnt do anything change it back to
enabled. Remember to click on Save Settings whenever you make a change to
the router settings.

Nope it way past yours, or have you been on the 'sauce' again, don't
let your mother know that you're stealing her stash.

Question.... how on earth does a firewall installed on a PC (or MAC)
affect the ability of a router to synch up with the DSLAM at the
exchange(I'll give you a very big clue it doesn't). The OP was not
talking about getting on the internet they were talking about the very
basic of synch'ing up.

Pity they don't appear to be able to get the login sorted out.

I gave up after 3 resets in 24 hours, mind you I have sent a post to
the people who run the site, so we'll see what transpires...

Hi Kraftee,

Just to clarify, we did receive an email saying

I am repeatedly unable to login, each time I ask for a reset & that
allows me in for one session, in which I change the supplied password
to one I can remember only to find that the next time I try & login again I can't.
It's almost as bad as SKY supplying me with a password which doesn't
work on the broadband part of their site but does on others. I
eventually cracked that one so a little help please so I can frequent
this forum a little more often...

with the user id of

IP Address: 90.194.2xx.xxx
User Name: Unregistered
User ID: 0

Which is obviously you, We checked your IP address to see if we could
find out your username and manually activate it. Our forum software,
shows us no Username with the IP address you sent the message from.

If you would like me to activate your account, please email me
newsreader @ skyuser.co.uk and I will sort out for you.

As for the AOL advertising, we use their money to pay for our site, so
we will never have to charge our members. If you cannot understand this
concept than fine. You have a choice to click on an advert or ignore
it.

Perhaps if you would have given us the username that you signed up for
we could have resolved this quicker, as we are no good at reading
minds, also just for further clarification, out of 4100 members you are
the only one to report this problem.

On further investigation:

You have registered as káftéé and not kráftéé, in other words you
spelt your own name wrong.

The following message was sent to you via the SkyUser - The unofficial
support forum for everything Sky! Contact Us form by kráftéé.

When you search for the user name kráftéé on our software, we get
"No Users Matched Your Query"

When you emailed us, you filled in kráftéé on the contact form and
not káftéé which is what you actually registered on our forum, so
when we searched to manually activate your account we got "No Users
Matched Your Query"

Your account is actually active, you have verified it, I think it is
just a simple case of you putting in kráftéé with your password and
hence getting the errors you are saying.

However if you put in the login box káftéé and your password, you
should be able to login.

We did not choose your username or password, you did, so in future you
should really get your facts right before putting down our log in
procedures. Like I said you are the only one to report this and it is
in no way our fault.

Are you really *really* sure that you are not connected to Sky. As the
tone of your replies, is very Sky like. The way you posting is
"patronising" to say the very least...

Mind you your posts would have read completely differently if only you
had used a smiley.

Still I would like to thank you for giving me another reason to *not*
use Sky Broadband (for the time being)....

The tone he used attacking our site, was more than I used, I am in no
way connected to Sky.

If he had used a smily, then I would have. Works both ways.

What I say has no nearing whether you sign up to Sky or not, if you
choose to not do so, your call. I don't get paid commission if you do
or don't. :)

Seriously though, it was his fault not ours, yet he posted it was. :)

I have since emailed him to help out.

Your username on here is kráftéé, there is a user on the memberlist
of
káftéé (ie without the r) is that you?

Well it wasn't when I posted, always gone by kraftee or kráftéé & I
have managed to login 3 times in 2 months so I don't know what gives.
Mind you after having to deal with my neighbours PC & router where
passwords appear to be changing randomly anything is possible (even
when to the trouble of tripple checking & they still got changed)...

Also the internet light on the router never comes on, no blinking amber

definitely no solid green light.

You should also try disconnecting ALL the phones, faxes, digiboxes,
video games, Tivos, alarms, etc that are in the house and connected to
the phone.

If the router works in another house and still doesn't in yours then
the odds are that the DSLAM in your exchange needs resetting or is
faulty.

How the hell is mentioning ANYTHING about the PC helpful? IT HAS
NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE PC. Do you even have a remote grasp of
how a connection works when you use a Router instead of a modem
connected to the PC?

do you actually have a grasp of manners
mine works
i installed it and set it up
it has 4 pc's connected to it
you are a fool with a big mouth
hiding behind a keyboard and a smirk
obviously way past your bedtime little one
:-)

Nope it way past yours, or have you been on the 'sauce' again, don't let
your mother know that you're stealing her stash.

Question.... how on earth does a firewall installed on a PC (or MAC)
affect the ability of a router to synch up with the DSLAM at the
exchange(I'll give you a very big clue it doesn't). The OP was not talking
about getting on the internet they were talking about the very basic of
synch'ing up.

Now go to bed like the naughty boy that you are or santa will take all
your toys away, like he does with all simpletons trying to make out that
they know more than they do.

the reply was to conor
thicko!!
also if you live to my age
which with your attitude is doubtful then you can apply as my sarcasm as you
like

How many times have you spoke to people who do this job all day every day,
at the other end of the phone to AOL or BT? Who tell you to uninstall the
software, get you to clear your cache etc etc etc etc, reboot your computer
etc.

You explain to the drone, I am logged into the router, that means it aint
the computers fault....
