Need some RPTV convergence/geometry advice

I have a Toshiba 56H80 RPTV set. I bought it new close to 7 years ago.
Over the years I've tried to do what I could to keep the set looking
good and working well. I had a few convergence chips replaced a year or
two ago when they went out. For the most part I really enjoy the set
but it never seems to be quite as good as I think it could be. I
suppose I could foot the bill for an ISF calibration but I thrive on a
challenge and really enjoy doig these things and learning in the
process.

This week with kids gone and wife happily enjoying the new 27" LCD in
another room, I decided to give the set a thorough going over. I'm very
adept with the service menus and I have a service manual. One of the
things that has always troubled me about this set is that I can never
get the internal patterns to display. When in Adjustment mode, I press
'input' and the screen clearly changes to something, but there is no
white cross, just a black screen. I know you should have nothing
plugged into Video1 and I ensured that is the case but still I see no
internal patterns from the set. Any thoughts?

Also, when I am doing a service convergence, the cursor-box that is
used to select each convergence point seems to get quite elongated at
points near the edge of the screen. As hard as I try I cannot get that
box to look like the others toward the center (though I realize this is
not the goal) but it gives me the impression that the picture may be
stretched somewhat as it starts to fall off the screen. I have set the
picture for about 5% overscan using VE patterns and the geometry looks
ok, but it just seems like that box should be uniform at all points. Is
it just playing tricks on my eyes?
