any idea what freq Comcast uses for their HDTV?
I want to get all the free stuff I can from the cable with out
having to replace my digital converter with one of their large HDTV
converter box
just to get HDTV.

If by "frequency", you mean which QAM digital cable channels are used
for the digital HD locals, that varies between each local system.
Comcast owns many local franchises, many purchased / gobbled up from
smaller cable companies, and they have different bandwidths (may be a
550 MHz, 650, 800 MHz or higher capacity system) and different
build-outs. There is no national channel line-up for Comcast, you have
to ask locally at places like the local threads at avsforum.com.

If you have a HD TV with a QAM tuner, hook up the cable and do a
channel scan. The HD locals will likely come in at QAM channel numbers
like 103.1, 97.3, 91.4, or whatever. But do not expect to get the
national HD channels such as ESPN-HD, TNT-HD, Universal-HD; these will
mostly be scrambled. To get those channels, you will need a cable STB
($5 for a STB to $10+/month for a HD-DVR) or a HD TV with cable card
capability.

forget going cheap, get the Comcast HD DVR
There is not enough decent HD programing on when you want it, so better to
have the DVR harvest it so you have choices when you want.

Connecting Comcast Cable directly to the rf on my LC-32D40U produces some
rather nice results, All the local stations, which broadcast HD, come in but
not necessarily at the suspected channel allocation. Channel 07 HD comes in
on 78.9, etc. Also get quite a few digital stations but random allocation.
All the music channels come in also, but again on random channel
allocations, such as channel 109.4 and up.
Interesting experiment since I do not want to subscribe to Comcast "HD"
Package at this time and currently have no need for their rental DVR.
However, ease of operation, lack of confusion as to channel use, and the
ability to time shift the programming then op for their spiel and rent the
HD box.
