USB cable for PCHumax link?
I've got a Humax 9200T (which I'm in love with), and I'd like to
connect it to my PC so I can archive stuff, burn to DVD, and so on. The trouble is, the PVR's about 7 or 8 metres from the PC (depending on how I route the cable), and that distance is non-negotiable. Is this likely to cause a problem? Secondly, I've heard talk of unreliable data transfers with the Humax PC software - is this true, and if so, is there any solution? Thirdly, can anyone recommend a supplier that could provide a suitable cable for the purpose? My default for cables is Maplin, but are there better places? It would need to be Interweb mail-order - I'm housebound. advTHANKSance. -- John Hatpin |

Swapping this for a more solid maplin supplied cable of the same length had it working fine with Humax's software and a third party application - media e-linker. Over an 8m run I'd expect you'd need a very good quality cable to be reliable -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away" www.drzoidberg.co.uk www.ebayfaq.co.uk |

Normally 5m is the maximum, but you can get a 5m "active extension" from Maplins, plus a normal A-B lead (3m or 5m). I haven't tried it, though I use a normal 5m lead regularly. Secondly, I've heard talk of unreliable data transfers with the Humax PC software - is this true, and if so, is there any solution? I haven't had any problems with the standard Media eLinker software. There are alternative programs which people have written for the Humax, available he http://www.hummy.org.uk/invison/index.php?dlcategory=5 , though I haven't tried it. -- Max Demian |

You should be able to daisy-chain up to 5 x 5m cables with USB hubs though. More expensive would be a USB over Cat5 extender. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding, and that device doesn't itself have 5m, so I'd need, say, 2x5m cables between PC - hub - Humax? Sorry if I sound a bit stupid here, but I'm a little bit out of my depth. Thanks - I'll look into those if I get software problems. I'd guess they were written for a reason! -- John Hatpin |

That's right, assuming you've allowed for a bit of slack when measuring the 8m. -- Max Demian |

You can just about get 10m on a single run, alternatively insert a hub with
2 5m runs. Prices on USB cables are now low, so if you are near Maplin go there, otherwise buy on the web. "DavidM" wrote in message ... "John Hatpin" .co.uk wrote in message ...
