DLP Projector Resoultion [HELP]

I have an HP VP6320 DLP projector.
The native resolution is 1024 X 768, but the specs show compatibility with
720p and 1080i.
My question is, if I connect a HDMI connection with 720p or 1080i source
material, will I get true 720p and 1080i results on my projector?
Or.. if the projector must first convert 1080i or 720p to it's native 1024 X
768, is data lost?
I currently only have a standard DVD (upconverting) through an HDMI
connection to the projector (and it looks fabulous), but I'd like to connect
an HD tuner, HD Cable or Dish Network's HD package, but not if the VP6320
won't properly show 720p or 1080i in it's glory (I am a year away from a
1080p projector). I'd really like to get and HDDVD or Blue Ray but I wonder
how they will look.
Any help or comments are appreciated.

The projector probably has a native aspect ratio of 4 x 3 while High Def is
16 x 9. To display a 16 x 9 picture, adding the horizontal bars at the top
and bottom will remove 192 pixels leaving 1024 x 576 for the picture. So the
projector must rescale the 1080i or 720p (or even the 480i/480p DVDs) to
1024 x 576. How good it does that depends on the projector. But based on
your report on DVD picture quality and my experience with High Def using an
even lower res projector ( 800 x 600 = 800 x 450 in 16 x 9 aspect ratio),
expect High Def from cable, tuner or dish to look stunning. It may not be
all that High def is capable of, but you will be pleasantly surprixed just
how good it will look.
