Well - my war with Time Warner is not over yet, but I did almost all humanly possible: I called FCC - they acknoledged that Time Warner is breaking rule - they told me FCC do not enforce rules and told me to file a commplain at NY agency - 800 342-3377 - which I did. I notified my Congress/Senat representative I sent my case to On Your Side from WABC I posted a message on misc.legal.moderated asking if it is possible to file a class action suit against Time Warner for breaking FCC rules I cried on my wife's shoulder... Anything else can I do? Zalek Cable TV is a luxury, not a right. If you don't want to pay their price, DON'T GET CABLE! Plain and simple. Dave Dude, I live in apartment building where my only choice is cable TV or no TV - plan and simple. If I had a choice to switch to a satellite I wouldn't bitch about my problem. Zalek I live in an apartment too and I pay $10/month for my box. I don't have to, but I choose to because I want digital cable. If you don't want to pay for a box, don't get cable. What's so hard about that? Nobody's forcing you to get cable. Dave |

Zalek If I were you, this would be the least of my concerns. My biggest concern would be having a warrant out for my arrest for possession of stolen property. I'll bet eventually, you will get caught. Then, you'll spend a WHOLE LOT more than what it'd cost to rent a box. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't pay to rent a box. Did you let the people you contacted know that the box was from Time Warner? If so, how do you know that the authorities haven't already been alerted? Besides, there are a lot more important things in life than cable. Dave |

It is not needed like, say electricity or gas, and even those not everyone has. Do what you want, but is it worth the possibility of being convicted of a crime to save a few bucks? As for the name calling, mature adults should not have to result to such behavior. Dave |

Snipe at this guy all you want to, and keep telling him he doesn't really need cable, but the fact is that he's right. As for me, I used a Rat Shack box to get basic cable on a '70s-era TV until I eventually replaced the set. Everything worked fine, and nobody at the two cable companies I dealt with back then ever had a problem with me doing it. I saved $2/mo for ten or twelve years. |

It's not like anyone is forcing you to rent a box; it's a choice. I could get by without a box if I went back to basic cable, but I choose to get digital cable and so I need the box. I've never had a problem renting a box, because I knew I'd need it if I decided to go digital. Dave |

I've never had a problem renting a box, because I knew I'd need it if I decided to go digital. The thing is that the choice is not about whether to rent a box; the choice is about getting service. The box is incidental to that choice. Clearly, the cable company wants you to rent its box. It's free to advertise that to you, or cajole you into it, or offer a box with cool features, package the box at a discount, or whatever. What it can't reasonably do is designate all other boxes as incompatible, regardless of whether they are or not, and force you to rent its box. Hobson's choice is not really any choice at all. |
