Digital tuners no High Def?
Just wondering here. Tv makers need to put digital tuners in certain
size tvs now and in a bit all sizes. Do the tvs need to display High def (say 1080i,720p) or just be able to accept digital signal and play it at whatever say 480i? It costs more to get a tv to display HD (1080i,720p) than480i, yes/no? |

Don't let the modes confuse you. Any set with a digital tuner can display the same picture as any other set in it's native resolution. Even most HDTV's don't support 1080i native. They downconvert it to whatever res they support. For an SDTV, I think that would be about 720x370 in 16:9 mode. An SD picture would be 720x480. Smaller plasma's are 1024x768 native or even less. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

TV only need to accept digital signals. Analog (over-the-air) signals will cease in February, 2009. Analog signals provided by cable and satellite will still be available. |

Ok so a tv with digital tuner is not necessarily a HDTV. Correct. And you don't need an HDTV to enjoy HD broadcast. They are quite nice on an SDTV. There's really no such thing as an HDTV broadcast. It's just an HD broadcast. Many people would be happy with a an HD program on an SDTV. I can't get my wife to give up her old 32" analog tv. I've tried offering a big widescreen, even a bigger projector. She just doesn't want anything else since I switched to digital behind a MthTV box. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

When we were going through our problems with the Sharp DLP and itt went to the shop, our LCD moved from the bedroom to the living room. The old 27" CRT went back to the bedroom. When we tuned the HD channels off the Time-Warner STB, it appeared in letter-box form, but the picture quality was great. Dave Clary/Corpus Christi, Tx Home: http://davidclary.com |

We use it mostly for watching archived movies and listening to music (really love that Goom visual ;-) I have a Vizio GV42L LCD TV and Dish Network w/VIP 211 HD receiver. I have a PVR-250 card currently, but I'd like to be able to capture some HD content from the hi-def outputs of the Dish box. I haven't started researching what is currently available. Can you recommend a capture card that has component inputs and works with Linux/MythTV? I recently upgraded my Myth boxes (3 total) from version .16 to .20. Wow, what an improvement. IVTV even works. ;-) |

I don't know of any component capture cards. If the dish box outputs firewire, you can capture that without a capture card if your PC has firewire support. Sorry, I don't do anything but ATSC. It's already comes in as mpeg-2. Just save the file and play it back. Another big advantage of digital (ATSC) TV. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |
