Plasma - RTFP (Read the Fine Print)

My first HDTV is a Panasonic, LCD, 720p, 768x1366 pixel which I
purchased in August. I love it. So I'm looking into getting a larger
set to replace my primary TV.

My local Costco has gobs of plasma TVs. Since Panasonic has been
running lots of ads about plasma TV's, that's where I looked first.
Noticebly absent from all Panasonic (and many others) plasma TV boxes
was any relevant information. Pixel count was absent. Native format
is absent. Sure all HDTV's take 1080i input format because that's a
requirement of ATSC. What I discovered was quite disturbing. Most
plasma TV's (at Costco) are 768x1024 pixels and they down-convert
everything except 480i. That's right, only 1024 pixels wide, and I had
to go online to find that out. I consider that quite poor (for HD),
especially since my LCD is 1366 pixels wide.

I believe that a TV must be at least 720 pixels high to be called HD,
apparently there is not horizontal standard.

Did I interpret all this correctly??

Some say the minimum is 1280x720. Take your pick.:-)

There is a standard, the NTSC's formats. There are 18 DTV formats, 6
of which are HD. The lowest vertical resolution in all 6 formats is
720p. It's fairly well known that Plasma displays below 50" are
1024x720ish. It appears they are allowed to get away with advertising
these sets as HD. On the practical side, I believe it's impossible to
tell the difference between 1024 and 1280.
