I notice from Jan 1st Sky will be charging £4.75 for their "free" magazines,
but will reduce the Sky Subscription by the same amount. So does that mean
you can cancel these mags and get a reduced subscription as I can't see how
they can force you to buy them, and surly the Sky subscription should be the
same if you take the mags or not!!

Sky say, there is no level of reduction on your subscription
They will automatically charge you from 1st Jan unless you cancel your mag

As someone else says, it's 1.75, but they'll reduce the sub by the same amount
so you pay the same overall.

Basically, they're just reintroducing the VAT dodge they had a few years back
so they can claim it back, or something like that, due to putting a fictional
price on something that's given away free.

The mag's a waste of toilet paper anyway. There are no proper schedules in it
and the letters are all

Q: "Dear Sky, I love (actor/programme). When are they next on Sky?"
A: "Thankyou for your letter. (Actor/programme) can be seen on Sky this month
starting..." etc.

They just hold on to the letters until they can fit them in with their
advertising of their cheesy wares... or, heaven forbid, they make them up!

It is a clever method of tax evasion/raising income - example:
* Subscription of say £25 includes approx £3.72 VAT ("included" in the
subs)
* Subscription of £23.25 includes approx £3.46 VAT.

The £1.75 magazine is zero rated for VAT, so doing this gains Sky 26p per
subscriber per month = £3.12 per year per subscriber in VAT saving.

And so a quick calculation on the current number of subscribers (8m active
I believe) gives a net VAT/cash saving of £24m per annum!

Hard to believe such a little change can have such a big impact. I bet the
accountant that dreamt that up will get a bonus!

(I may be wrong, but I think my figures stack up!)

The same as supermarkets do with credit and debit cards.

A letter sent with my magazine last week says:
"PS. Exciting news: 'Sky the magazine' is changing!
What out for our new look 'Sky the magazine' next month [1] there'll
be even more information about your favourite entertainment! [2] From
1 Jan 2007 the total price you pay to BSkyB Publications for your
magazine will be £1.75. Your subscription payment will be discounted
by the price of the magazine, so you won't see any changes to your
monthly payment, just loads more info [3] on your favourite TV."

[1] is that the 3rd relaunch in a year, or the 4th?
[2] they are reinstating the actual LISTINGS that they dropped in
1998? [3] the word they are looking for is "information".

I'd like to know if I can save money by cancelling the magazine, too.

[2] I suspect it is not that useful
[3] I suspect that the word mean is trivia

In some EU countries it is illegal to force the sale of an item when
selling another. ie You can sell a jacket and tie as a pair for £20
but cannot sell the jacket for £15 and insist that buyers also take
the tie for £5. Or a £300 holiday plus insurance for £100.

I'm not sure if it applies in the UK: probably not as the UK generally
opts out of such advantageous (for the consumer) legislation.

How do I get the mag?. I joined Sky about 6 months ago and I have never
received the mag (come to think of it, I have only received a printed
bill once).
I am on the basic package (not sky +)
