Freeview and 3am
My TV (which has a built-in Freeview tuner) switches half-on for a
couple of minutes at about 3am. By "half-on", I mean it's on standby, it clicks, the green LED comes on, but the screen stays off, then it clicks again a couple of minutes later and goes back to sleep, like I should be at that time in the morning. Not a problem at all, but it's got me curious. Is it picking up the guide information? Or is that streamed along with the rest of the MUX data, on the fly? I've noticed that the TV's guide is up-to-date all the time, while the PVR's guide can take a few minutes to get completely updated, and was wondering if this was a connected issue. -- John Hatpin "I won't say ours was a tough school, but we had our own coroner. Its doing what a good/responsible DTT product should do, and checking for channel changes and OADs when the user isn't watching and for just a few minutes rather than being in full power mode all the time using high 'standby power' damaging the environment etc. It should also update the receiver without bothering you, unless you have changed the default setting to tell it not to. It may also be updating the 4TV guide, but most products use the standard 7 day DVB guide these days (you don't get advertising pushed at you) and is sent out continuosly. -- Tony |

How do 4TV get revenue then? or is it now a service provided with the product licence and the set manufacturer pays for it? Seems odd when the standard 7 day one is paid for by the licence and or general TV advertising. -- Tony |

AIUI, advert delivery was something cooked up by Setpal / Novapal (now defunct) and Daewoo in an attempt to derive revenue from the EPG (perhaps to defray those costs?). It has never afflicted any of the other boxes, but who knows what might happen in the future? |
