On the DVD recorder which you originally recorded with, is there an
option on the menu to "close" or "finalise" the disc?

What software are you using on your PC to play the DVD, and, what type is
the DVD player on your PC?

There seem to be lots of problems with that particular drive. Just do a
Google on "Mat****a UJ-810" and you'll see what I mean.
Have you installed the latest firmware?

If you don't have specific DVD playback software, you may not have an MPEG2
codec installed, which you will need. Will the PC play other DVDs?

Also, my domestic DVD recorder (Pioneer) can write DVDs in two formats,
Video and VR modes. The former is compatible with other DVD players, the
latter is not.

The PC will not play any other DVD's. Trying the latest version of Windows
Media Player. Coputer came with Sony Sonicstage. The computer is a Sony
Vaio PCV-V1/G.

I have tried to finalise in both format V as well as VR.. but no difference.

Well that will be your problem. You need an MPEG2 decoder which doesn't come
with Windows or Media Player.

Try installing the file from he

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...EG_2_Codec.htm

Media Player should then play DVDs including tour DVD-RW.

You could try installing this pack of codecs. It's supposed to allow you to
play just about any video content.

It certainly makes sense to get the PC playing "regular" DVDs first.
And I think the PCV-V1/G should have come with a DVD player - WinDVD -
as part of its software package. (I used one some months ago which did;
and the Sony software manual refers to it.) Do you still have a shortcut
for WinDVD in your Start menu and/or on your desktop? If so, have you
tried playing a DVD with that?

I dont have WinDVD on my PC. The software that came with the PC was
Sonicstage. I will check the Vaio site in the meantime.

Why not simply download VLC Media Player.
It's freeware, and one of the best.
It will play almost anything, including DVDs.

SonicStage is for music. If WinDVD was not installed on your PC you may
have a CDROM labelled "VAIO recovery and documentation disc" from which
it could be installed. But see below

What Ian suggests would indeed give you a free and more comprehensive
solution for media files than the WinDVD which should have come with
your Vaio if (as now appears) you have to install something from
scratch, and are happy to do so.

Do you mean you are unable to play any DVD at all or just the one from
your DVD recorder?

If you cannot play commercial DVDs, what do you se if you put a
commercial DVD in your PC's DVD drive; open Windows Explorer (or My
Computer); and then double click the DVD drive?

Ummm....
I wonder what the problem is.
It certainly should play DVDs. See
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

After you have put the DVD in, and let it wind up to speed, go to 'My
Computer', Explore, and right-click on your DVD drive. Do you get the
option of 'Play with VLC Media Player'?

Alternatively, start VLC Media Player. Click on 'File', then 'Open Disc'
(I like the correct spelling!). You should then have the choice of 'DVD
(menu)', 'DVD', 'VCD' and 'Audio CD'. Select 'DVD (menu)'. [Note: Mine
does not start if I select 'DVD'.] You should see the DVD drive light
flashing, and the menu should come up on the screen. Click the cursor on
'Play' (or whatever should set the disk going).
[Note : This is just one of the ways of playing the disk. One
alternative is 'File', 'Open Directory', navigate to your DVD drive,
highlight it, and click 'OK'].

If you still have no luck, does VLC play any other type of multimedia
files (wmv, wma, avi, ra, mp3 etc)?

Let us know how you get on. However, I'm not an expert. Maybe someone
else has some other ideas.

Ian.

What does Sony support tell you about the DVD playing capabilites of
your computer? (PCV-V1/G). Find it a bit hard to believe that a
multimedia promoting company would supply a customer a computer without
an MPEG2 DVD Codec!

http://www.trustedreviews.com/pcs/review/2004/05/21/Sony-PCV-V1-G-Media-PC/p1

Looking at this review, It certainly should be playing DVD's.
