Honest answer needed..about SKY HD

Ok, heart is ruling my head here and I will inevitably buy a family HD Tv
for family use ( I already own a small one for my xbox 360), and what I
would like is an as unbiased ' yay' or ' nay' as to wether it's worth
investing in SKY HD. I currently have the sports and movie packages etc and
realise that not only will I have to stump up some £300 for the sky HD
reciever and an EXTRA £10 per month for the HD content ( told ya haert is
ruling my head)...

but is it really worth it or do the initial ' ohhs' and ' ahhs' start to
wear a little thin?

I have heard stories that a lot of the HD content is simply upscaled
standard def content...is this true? If it is it ounds very naughty of sky
to offer it as " hi def"...

I do understand early adopters of this sort of technology will ferociously
defend their purchases, but I would like a balanced opinion...

thanks :-)

Apparently there's an offer in some stores of £150 off the Sky HD box
if you buy a TV of about the same value, so if you're considering a
new TV anyway then that might be a decent deal.

If you've got the sports and movies already then you'll get the best
of the extra HD subscription, getting the HD sports and movies as well
as the regular 'basic' HD channels.

I have heard stories that a lot of the HD content is simply upscaled
standard def content...is this true? If it is it ounds very naughty of sky

Some channels (e.g. BBC HD, Sky One, Sports, and I think Artsworld)
show upscaled SD when there are no genuine HD programmes being
transmitted - but you can tell the difference as true HD programmes
are marked as HD in the EPG. The other channels (Discovery, NG,
History, Box Office HD) are HD all the time.

You can get the box for less than this.

You don't say whether you currently have Sky+ but, if you don't,
getting an HD box would give you the Sky+ function for free as well.

Even if you do have Sky+, you could always get the HD box but not
subscribe to the HD package. You would still get the Sky+ function for
free and would be able to see the BBC HD channel.

I have heard stories that a lot of the HD content is simply upscaled

Yes.

I have had HD for about 1 week now.

I would say it's not worth spending £300 for the box. Wait until the price
drops.

What puts me off is that there's not a single TV show that makes me think
"Wow, this would be so much better if it looked a tad sharper."

An HDTV wouldn't improve the scripts in Eastenders or improve the share
results read out in Working Lunch.

I'd find it good for games, but if I wanted to make use of it for the new DVD
formats, those companies are losing a fighting battle when Joe Punter is quite
happy with a £20 DVD player from Asda.

I accept your point, but for me HD is about documentaries, wildlife and
sports...shame we wont ever get to see US sports in hi def as ESPN does a hi
def feed in the states.

Personally, I think Eastenders in Hi def would be even more suicide inducing
than standard def.

It is only worth it with sports and movies, IMO, if you watch documentaries
then you are also in luck as there is a lot of original HD content shipped
from the US channels, but for me, that novelty wore off.

I suckered for it on launch, and am bound to be bias, but 6 months in, I am
still wowed by the whole HD thing and to be honest, its not the BBC content
that was so impressive when it first launched.

We get a *lot* of movies in HD now, months, years and pennies before/if the
HD-DVD formats take off, and the live sport content is generally very
impressive, but only really comes into its own with slow motion shots, and
that nasty blocking effect you get on grass in football matches.

It is *much* better than my integrated freeview tuner, but there is not
enough content without the sports and movies package at £50+ ppm to justify
the upgrade all said and done.

I love football, I love brainless blockbuster movies, I make loads of use of
it and its fecking great. Bias enough for you?
