I don't see it as an act of desperation. More of an acceptance that
Sky have now extracted as much money as they can out of the "early
adopters" and to achieve larger sales they need to drop the price a
bit (or a lot).

Perhaps not perceivably sharper, but they should definitely still BE
sharper.

sky wont budge from the £299 they are charging for an HD box when i called
them.
