SKY HD Sound problem

When switching on my TV (Hitachi 32LD 7200) and its set to AV6 (HDMI) I get a large amount of distortion / noise through the tv speakers, however it seems to go away after about 5 mins.

This only seems to happen when using a "digital" connection - through a scart lead there are no problems. Box was changed today and all seemed ok until engineer went away.

Wondered if the card may need replacing as its about 6 yr old now - even tho callback has been done and I called to check rec and HD features were enabled

Have looked on AV forums and googled but with no luck.

Anyone got any ideas what may be causing this. I'm racking my brains out here.

Thanks

I don't see how your viewing card could affect this. If you get your premium
channels and Sky+ features, your card works.

There was a problem with interference on (I think) LG sets, and it was
because (again, I think) the audio cable internally wasn't shielded.
Replacing it with a shielded cable (done under warranty I understand) fixed
the problem.

Could it be related?

Thanks for the reply. I have now become aware that the box wont record HD
but will rercord sd. The live pause does not work properly either.
Currently have no premium channels set up. My reason for asking about the
card are that the box seemed fine when engineer replaced it BUT when card
was "paired" seemed to be beginning of problems (woman at sky did say she
was having problems "pairing card to box and pass it to next level and
expect rec and HD to work in 4 to 24 hrs)

I shall mention your thoughts when i call engineer later

What puzzles me is how it only happens when set is switched on from cold and
lasts just few mins.

Thanks

If that's the case, I don't see how it can be related to the Sky box.

If your card hasn't been paired properly, that's the first thing I'd be
getting them to sort out. It took me three calls to them to get it all
working correctly when I did my self-install.

Thanks Andy

I will be onto them again then to double check the HD and rec etc is all set
up properly. Cannot do it at the moment as the footie is on and this leads
me to another query - when watching HD the pic looks very nice BUT if i
switch from HD (via HDMI) to the scart lead connection I can hardly notice
any difference in the PQ - there is certainly no WOW factor. Even when
using component/scart switching there is almost no difference in PQ. Is
there a noticeable diff between the scart and HDMI? I was expecting there to
be one! Reading some forums suggested that the Watford game shown last Mon
nite was excellent PQ. Is it posssible I may not be receiving HD even
though the channels are showing programmes?

The distorted sound problem only seems to be affecting the HDMI
cable/input - Component seems ok as does the scart too

Are you sure you're on an HD channel to start with? Secondly, in the 'Info'
screen, does it show that the particular programme you're watching is in HD?
The HD channels don't show HD all the time, sometimes it's just upscaled SD.

Yes - 525,145 543 and the banner says its HD - been on the phone to sky as
the 2nd box wont rec HD most of the time. However it behaved normally when
asjed to rec Jools Holland and the Live pause worked etc. But now when i
press pause it takes about 10 secs to actually pause and then the box locks
up and have to change channel to free it up. Also if i press rec then it
says its rec on the banner but go into the planner and it says "to be
recorded" and after prog finishes it says there was "no signal" Have done
full sys reset and even thought the lady at sky still said they were having
trouble pairing card to box that should not matter as everything alse was
correct. Feel like throwing it in the bin now.

Thanks again

The first HD box that Sky tried to install did much the same as your
describing. Luckily the engineer who installed it insisted on testing
everything before he left and just changed it for another one the van, which
so far has been well behaved.

Are you on the latest software?

Got to Services - 4 - 5

My box says:

Model: 607120
Version: 4E3004
OS Ver: 1.32A09
EPG Ver: HD 3.10q

If your doesn't say this, pull the power, and hold the backup button *on the
box* while you plug power in again until you get the on screen display
saying it's doing a software update. This can take 10 or 15 minutes I think.

Worth a shot

Also, check your signal (Services - 4 - 6) and make sure both inputs are
locked and have good signal.

Latest software was loaded when box went it and when i checked signal
strength just now transponer 1 was at 70 to 80 per cent for S&Q
but no2 was (just for a very brief moment) was not saying locked and then it
changed to locked and the signal strength and quality are at about 60 and 50
% but also go up higher too - it has remained locked since.

should i ask engineer back to test the alignment is a good as it can be?

Maybe if card is not paired properly as sky suggested then that is the
problem - even tho they say everything else is looking ok their end.

Thanks
