HDTV/DVR/VCR tape

I am upgrading to a DVR this week along with HDTV. I noticed that you
can't download a program to VCR in HD unless you have a new HD
VCR/TAPE.

Question: I am assuming that I can still dump programs off on to tape
regardless of HD or not. HD would default to lower resolution. This
backward compatibilities is normal in computer so I am assuming here
too.

Definitely. You can connect an analogue output from the DVR
(preferably the S-Video which is better than composite) to the VCR or
DVD recorder to archive programming you've recorded on the DVR. Of
course, any HD material is down converted to SD. You might have to
fiddle with the output mode of your DVR to get the right results and
screen shape. For example, with my Sony HDD250, I set the output as SD
(so I can see the menus) and choose sqeeze mode (to compress 16:9 into
4:3). The result plays back as 16:9 SD. I do the same thing to record
OTA digital broadcasts using a Samsung stand-alone tuner and my DVD
recorder.

So, enjoy your recording.
