I believe sony have now discontinued CRT production.
I'm glad I got mine before they did.

Last time I saw them for sale was in tesco, but that's not a guarantee
they're still available. They were vastly reduced in price at the turn
of the year

You can still get CRT, but Sony may be hard to find. One of our more AV
oriented suppliers still has a Sony KV32HX15TNS.U listed, although the
stock is shown as nil, so it may be they will not get any more anyway.

Save your money for the current LCD replacement called SED. Surface
Emitting Display. The picture is exactly like a CRT but on a flat screen
and it's brilliant. You get black instead of grey and none of this ghosting
effect on moving objects.
Manufacturers are now waiting until we have bought all the old technology
LCD equipment before restocking. Notice how prices have come right down?
If LCD wasn't years old, they would all be fitted with freeview tuners. Not
all are.
LCDs use quite a bit of power when compared to a CRT, I was always led to
believe through false advertising that LCD used less. That's not the case.

We don't really need any new TVs in our house, but I have started to
think about getting one with a CRT (while they still exist), and putting
it in the freezer until I need it.
Ian.

Are you sure about that?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SED-tv
It seems that these have been "coming soon" since 1999.
Toshiba are now claiming 2008 for the first ones.
Thats a pretty long wait for someone who wants a TV now.

Notice how prices have come right down?

Because they are now mass-market items. The same thing happened with DVDs
about 6 years ago and there is no sign of them disappearing any day now.

There are many alternative display technologies under
development. Not all of them will need a large cabinet.

It would be a gamble to predict which ones will be a big
success. Could a high-quality headset be the new Walkman?

Manufacturers are now waiting until we have bought all the old technology

Prices have come down because of a big increase in supply.

If LCD wasn't years old, they would all be fitted with freeview tuners. Not
all are.

All manufacturers now build for a global market. Freeview
only works in the UK. It has taken a while to build tuners
compatible with other markets. I guess this is more to do
with things like the EPG rather than the decoding standards.

LCDs use quite a bit of power when compared to a CRT, I was always led to
believe through false advertising that LCD used less. That's not the case.
