Both broadband lines were installed quickly and at the arranged time, the product is reliable and consistent. Arranging the installations over the phone was a nightmare, involving very long telephone conversations and swapping between departments. Perhaps Ed is pleased with his current tv/internet and phone package, and will be partaking of some personal fisting this evening as he does every other evening rather than trying to change his comms provider. |

Yes I agree, we have two NTL connections to our rented house. Both broadband lines were installed quickly and at the arranged time, the product is reliable and consistent. Arranging the installations over the phone was a nightmare, involving very long telephone conversations and swapping between departments. Perhaps Ed is pleased with his current tv/internet and phone package, and will be partaking of some personal fisting this evening as he does every other evening rather than trying to change his comms provider. In the same sentence you say the priduct is reliable, which is great, but actually arranging it was a nightmare. Fortunately I get sky free from virgin radio and work pays for my broadband |

In the same sentence you say the priduct is reliable, which is great, but actually arranging it was a nightmare. This pretty much sums up my experiences of NTL too. The actual product is good. TV, broadband and telephone, no real compliants, and in general a good reliable service. HOWEVER, when it goes wrong (as even the best service will from time to time) their customer service and support is generally very poor. Fortunatly, I've only every had to use it 2-3 times in the last 3 years. Cheers, Chris. |

A friend of mine who lives outside the ntl cabled area has a BT line with ADSL and it is **** poor! Even "upto" (what is that all about!!) 8Mbits.. anyone know of anyone actually getting the full 8Mbits as advertised ? thought not.. most is about 7.1Mb (unless you live ontop of the exchange and have signed up to the higher tarif connections 16/24 etc) My ntl 10Mbit is 10Mbit.. I`d be surprised if they couldn`t as current customers can get all sorts of cheapo deals. If you hardly use your phone then you`ll get line rental for half price for a start. Any of the interactive stuff (text and multi-screen) is very slow on my NTL
service (LU5 area). Never really used Freeview interactive in anger, so not sure on a comparison. Rarely use (interactive) it anyway, so not really a problem anyway. "Jim S" wrote in message ... Don't have a phone line, have an ATA and use VoIP. Virtually all allow you to use an ATA which you connect your DECT to, it's only Skype that force you to have to have a PC switched on, with proper VoIP providers, you use the ATA and the PC doesn't need to be on. VoIPCheap, VoIPStunt, SIPDiscount, VoIPBuster, Sipgate, VoIPTalk, OrbTalk, and the many other SIP VoIP providers do not requre the use of a PC to make and receive calls, because they are all an open standard and not propriery like Skype there are many ATAs and if you don't want to use you own phones, VoIP Phones available all at lower costs that a Skype DECT bodged device. who also charge for an incoming number! 20 quid a year compared to ~120 from BT or Cable, big deal. 20 quid more than proper VoIP providers. Skype charges for voicemail, proper VoIP it's free. Proper VoIP charges less for calls. People use Skype when they don't realise proper, cheaper and better VoIP services are out there. |

VoIPCheap, although I use VoIPStunt offer you 300 mins free calls every week to many country landlines, to get free calls you top up with €10 (Ten Euro) on VoIP Stunt this means you get 120 days of free calls, after 120 you don't lose your credit you can continue to use the account but pay 1c/min instead, also within your 120 days you can use the credit on chargeable calls. VoIPCheap/VoIPStunt, SIPDiscount etc are some of the most popular VoIP services and puts the rip-off cost Skype to shame. You you can use an ATA with VoIPCheap, VoIPStunt etc, just look at the link for where it say SIP calls, you just enter those details into your SIP ATA, or you can if you wish use a software phone, same as the other SIP/proper VoIP services. With all these VoIP services you can call others on the same provider for free, and with VoIP providers such as Sipgate who have peering arangements you can call other users on other networks for free also. Skype is OK for kids and for testing out VoIP, but proper SIP VoIP is where people go once they have realised Skype is just Hype. I'm surprised you weren't impressed with the likes of VoIPCheap/VoIPStunt etc, look how much Skype charged to call landlines (dearer than BT at times) and dearer than the likes of Call1899 (3p per call), VoIPStunt gives you free calls to landlines in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries, the credit you do use to top up with isn't wasted on the free calls as it can be used on chargeable calls. This is why I was able to dump the landline and go VoIP, and for 15 months VoIPStunt/VoIPCheap etc didn't enforce the top-up requirement, so for £0 I had 15 months of free calls, and for £1.80ish per month I don't think VoIPStunt is bad at all, certainly ****es all over Skype. I use VoIP Stunt with my ATA, so don't need a PC on at all to make and receive calls, same as the other SIP VoIP providers I listed. Yes with VoIP Stunt etc you need to use their software to create a username and password, but once you have done this, you no longer need it and just use your ATA. VoIP Talk you just create your account, if you don't want to use a software phone, you don't download it, you just enter the details on your ATA.
