Why does a movie DVD look great on my digital projector, but HDTV doesn't?

I am using a Toshiba TDP-T9U projector and have, through Comcast, a
Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3250HD converter viewing only the network
HD content.DVD movies look great when shown on the projector from my
Phillips HTS 3440 DVD player through the component video to VGA cable.
Using the same cable, (moving the component connectors to the HDTV
converter) the HDTV content (football games, etc.) looks less than DVD
quality. Am I doing something wrong?

Your projector is native 720p resolution..
Check to see if your 3250HD is outputting 720p to it, not 1080i.

Network anything is blah. You don't say what DVD materials your playing,
but if it's first release major film or similar, it's going to look better
than anything from a OTA source. HD or not.

I think, for whatever reason, you are not seeing real HD. Is the converter
set to output 720p for ABC and Fox, and 1080i for NBC CBS PBS, & everything
else? Is the converter receiving the old analog 480i channels, and not the
digital HD channels?

I have the converter set for pass through so that whatever resolution
the networks
are using gets passed through to the projector. The projector supports
all the signals
that the networks provide. I guess I would have to take the projector
to someone's house
who already is getting great HD and hook mine up to their signal source.

You clearly have not seen OTA HD. House and Bones on Fox, NCIS on CBS
look particularly good. Leno Also.

As for the original post, are you certain you're actually seeing HD?
The DVDs should be good but the detail on HD should be noticeably
better.
