SKy HDMI/Scart switching

Silly question, but I have heard bad things about people having to
manually select the HDMI input on their TV when watching an HD channel
on SKy. Is this true, or should it really switch over automatically? I
presume the rest of the channels go through the scart lead in the
normal way

Why wouldn't you just watch everything through the HDMI? I'm sure
that's how it works with Telewest's TVDrive. I've got one, but not an
HD telly, and when you set it for HDMI the RGB SCART is disabled.

I guess that depends on the TV.

All the channels go through the scart lead in the normal way; it's just
that there's no benefit to watching HD channels over the scart.

For most TV's everything from the SKY HD box can go through HDMI

Whereas on SkyHD the HDMI, Scart and Component coexist quite peacefully.

The problem is that hdmi does not handle aspect ratio switching. If you want
to have automatic AR switching on non HD channels then you must connect via
SCART.

My SkyHD box is connected to my HD panel via both SCART and hdmi and it is
necessary (regrettably) to switch manually to SCART if you want auto AR.

Everything works fine on my TV with the box output on automatic. SD
4:3 programmes are displayed in 4:3 and widescreen in widescreen. Are
you sure you're not talking about the fact that the 720p/1080i signal
doesn't support switching?

Then it's a problem with your HD panel or the video output setting on
your Sky box (or a compatibility problem).

Very interesting Alex!

My SkyHD box is set to 1080i. If I set it to 'Automatic' and then switch
from a HD channel to SD the screen goes blank.
My TV is a Pioneer PDP-434HDE, about 2.5 years old - one of the first HDMI
equipped HDTVs in the UK.

Is your Sky box connected to your TV ONLY via HDMI? I was under the
impression that HDMI does not upport aspect ratio switching. Your TV appears
to be clever enough to determine the correct aspect ratio for SD from the
625i signal via HDMI. Have I understood this correctly? What model TV do you
have?

Mine flicks between display modes. Sounds like a problem in your TV.

Makes no difference whether it is or not; I have to switch to scart (or
component) manually in any case if I want that.

576, I think you mean. I think the fact is that the aspect information
is sent over 576 but not over 720/1080. Have you tried selecting the
576 output (if you can do this) to see if that works properly?

Have I understood this correctly?
What model TV do you have?

It's a JVC.

I have tried 576 over HDMI and get no aspect ratio switching or HD.

The main issue appears to be that my TV doesn't like the 'Automatic'
setting.
